oyceter: Two of my rats in a tissue box (rat)
I have baby ratlings OMG they are so tiny and small and cute and tiny and cute!!!!

Flickr set (including last photos of Al, as well as Ed getting to know the ratlings)

I warn you all that my photography is absolutely terrible, and that my comments are mostly limited to: "OMG SO SMALL AND CUTE EEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!"

But yes! I have baby ratlings!!!!!

They are seriously as big as mice! They can crawl through the toilet paper roll without even getting stuck! I can barely get that paper roll over Ed's head!

So far, they look nearly identical, except one has a spot on his tummy on the left and the other has a spot on the right. One of them also has a small spot on his back next to his stripe, and he's also missing some of one finger. Poor baby. That one is so far the more adventurous one, who ran all over the play area and tried to jump off the couch. He has also been very enthusiastic about Ed-rat. The other one so far is more shy, and he has spent most of his time hanging around in the back of my cowl neck. It is so cute! He is this teeny warm lump around the nap of my neck! Maybe I will finally have one rat who will sit on my shoulder! (All my other rats would just try and climb down my shirt after a while.)

I am currently thinking of Syaoran and Watanuki as names, or maybe Momiji for the shy guy? I am not sure! They are also so young that their personalities are still revealing themselves!

Also, Ed was extremely excited when I let him crawl around their cage, although I swear, despite sniffing at their smells for forever, he sniffed at them through the bars of the cage, and then... ran off.

Oh Ed. They are tiny baby rats who are only five weeks old, and each one of them is about as big as your head.

But yes, at least he didn't lunge at them and try to bite them and end up biting me (Ren, I love you, but...). Since the ratlings and Ed seemed curious but not aggressive, I briefly let them play together in the bathtub, in which the braver ratling climbed all over Ed and tried to groom him as Ed attempted to sniff at the strange new babies and then tried to escape their energetic baby attention. Ahahaha Ed. Outmaneuvered by baby rats who together probably weigh half as much as you!

But I am glad, because I think he was really lonely after Al died, and he seems to be taking a much greater interest in things now. I don't know how to get them into the same cage, since the big cage has bars so spaced out that the babies can crawl right through, and while Ed seems to be okay with the ratlings, I am not sure he wants to live in the smaller cage and have two babies clambering over him all the time.

Any name suggestions highly welcome! I was thinking... twins? Anime or manga characters missing a finger?

In conclusion: OMG SO SMALL AND CUTE AND TEENY WEENY AND SOFT AND FURRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ratlings!

oyceter: Two of my rats in a tissue box (rat)
...well, almost.

Uh, so after polling everyone about non-rat pet options, I promptly cried myself to sleep for two days and decided I was not yet ready for Ed-rat to be my last rat. The new plan: get two baby boys. (I SO want those squishy adult guy rats. But if they die and Ed-rat dies all in a row I will be heartbroken. Also, reasoning for not transitioning directly to new non-rat pets right now is that I don't have enough resources financially to do so, and that would probably cover the older guys' vet bills as well.) When baby boys are a year or two older, transition to non-rat pets (probably guinea pigs, based on people's descriptions, my living circumstances, and etc.).

Alas and alack, I was due to get two baby boy rats today, and although I got to meet one, the other one had apparently escaped into another cage while in the car and couldn't be found until the rescue person had left. Still, I should have them by tomorrow night, and this gives me time to switch the cages around, since the baby boys are a LOT smaller than I thought they'd be. (FIVE WEEKS OLD OMG. They are as small as wee little mice!!!!!! They have giant gallumphing awkward feet!)

Poor Ed sniffed around very excitedly, and then realized there were no actual new rats. I think he is old and lonely without Al; he's been acting fairly neurotic lately, and I worry about him. Even if he doesn't get along with the new babies, hopefully having them in a cage next to his will help out.

Anyway! The real question is, what should I name the new ratlings?

They are both going to be black hooded boys, albeit with slightly different markings, thank goodness. I have zero idea about their personalities yet, so I'm just looking for random ideas.

So. I have had pet rats for the past 7 years, and although I love them to pieces, I think their short lifespans (2-3 years) are really wearing on me emotionally. (Poor Ed-rat. I think he is getting lonely too... he is getting kind of neurotic when I play with him.)

I think I am currently looking for a pet that isn't too high maintenance or expensive. I'm not interested in getting a dog, and I'm slightly allergic to cats. I'd prefer something that can't mess furniture up. I also tend to like the older guy rats because they're lazy and squishy and cuddly, as opposed to the more energetic girl rats. I'd also like something that lives for at least 5 years.

So far, I have been thinking of either ferrets or guinea pigs, but I have no idea outside of random things I've read on the Internet. I would also not be opposed to getting a litter-trained non-kitten cat or so, but have no idea how much work cats are. I'd also prefer adopting from a rescue agency over getting a pet from a breeder or pet store.

Also, I went to a local rat adoption fair and nearly succumbed. There was a pair of one-year-old boy rats, all fat and squishy, and one of them was a black berkshire like Fitz-rat, and one of them was a black rex like Ren. SO CUTE! Especially the black rex! He was even kind of balding like Ren! I so wanted to take them home! I always get so sad seeing the adult rats in adoption fairs, because their chances of being adopted are so low, thanks to the lifespan thing. I was trying to tell myself that if I got the two boys, maybe I wouldn't get as attached to them when they died in a year or so? Ha.

Al-rat

oyceter: Two of my rats in a tissue box (rat)
I took Al-rat in for exploratory surgery today, and the tumor they found was too big to operate on and interfering with his digestive system. He looked fairly noticeably worse when I picked him up from my friend yesterday; he was still eating a bit, but visibly uncomfortable. So I went with the vet's advice and let him go.

Mostly I feel bad about not being here the past week with scritches and etc., even though I know that wouldn't have changed anything. I think he was a very fat and spoiled rat who chewed on everything in sight and tried to drag it into his plastic hut to nest with, and hopefully the last week or so didn't feel too long or uncomfortable for him =(.

ETA: Is anyone planning on going to Potlatch and/or Fogcon next March?

Does anyone have recommendations for good vegan dessert recipes? General categorical suggestions are extremely welcome, such as "vegan cheesecakes are failproof!" or "don't even try vegan souffles, most of them are hard and don't taste good." Specific recipe recs also welcome, although they will be most useful if they are available online.

*

There was a prize drawing on Kobo Books a while back, and amazingly, I actually won a Kobo wireless ereader! I've been reading ebooks, primarily library ones, over my phone and on my computer, but the LCD screen still makes my eyes hurt if I read for too long. So far, I love having a dedicated ereader, but I'm not sure I love it enough that I would have shelled out over $100 for it. There are some bugs in the software that drive me up the wall: it keeps reverting to "sort by title" after I sync it, and I hate how it divides my books between "books" (epub) and "documents" (pdf) and will not sort PDF by author, even if I've given the document metadata in Calibre. I do love that it reads epub and PDF.

I haven't browsed much on the Kobo ebook store, largely because I still refuse to pay money for an ebook I want to keep. I am still a bit of a Luddite! I love my shelves and being able to browse, and the slow refresh of the e-ink screen added with the Kobo ereader's lack of bookmarks (srsly Kobo?!) makes it very hard to flip through a book to get to my favorite parts. I am quietly rooting for the day I can buy a physical book and get the ebook with it, or pay an addition dollar or so to get the ebook version.

*

I realize I have not blogged about my rats for a long time! Part of it is because Ren's death broke my heart, but a lot of it is also the move from LJ to DW, which doesn't have a handy photo-hosting option.

Anyway, Ed and Al are middle-aged or elderly rats now, and although they were pretty squishy before, they are even more so now! Especially Al. He is not quite as spherical as Bya used to be, but he is pretty close, and he does this funny waddle when he attempts to gallumph around. They are also the most prodigious chewers of all my rats, and I would poetically say that one of the rat blankets looks like a sky full of stars when I air it out and look at the light shining through all the gnawed little holes, but it seems rather silly to wax poetic about a literally ratty chewed-up blanket.

Al also has a cyst around the size of my pinky fingernail; it's been tested twice and is benign. Other than that, they've had very little respiratory problems, unlike some of my other rats. Since they are now older, they mostly like just snuggling up and sleeping (or chewing stuff), instead of running around like something is after them like they did when they were smaller. Ed! I mean YOU!! Also, now that it is getting chillier, it is super nice to have two fat rats sleeping on my lap when I read.

Al also loves to shred anything paper and drag it into his little plastic hut to nest. I know all rats do this, but Al so far is the most enthusiastic I've ever seen a rat behave, and I meanly annoy him by dragging all his carefully arranged paper scraps out of the hut so I can watch him scramble and put it all back together, one tiny scrap of paper at a time.

Witness! (sorry, terrible quality, I know)

I got home from work and was happily (re)compiling the Asian Women's Carnival* when I heard a strange rustling noise. After determining it was not, in fact, me, I peeked over to see yarn. On the floor. And a half-eaten piece of the rats' lab blocks...

Yes. Ed- and Al-rat somehow managed to escape from the cage and terrorized my yarn! Thankfully, none was chewed up, although a lot of it is now on the floor. Also, thankfully, unlike Ruki, they did not manage to spill all the precious laceweight from the top. Still!

Also, someone (AL I KNOW IT WAS YOU) chewed up Tiny Laptop's cord as well. ARGH!

EVIL. SO EVIL!

I should have known something was up when both of them finally figured out how to escape from the bathtub over the weekend...

* It was almost done, and then I foolishly did not save, my computer crashed, and... yeah.

Ed-rat has just now discovered one of the crucial skills all devious agouti berkshires (a la Ruki) should possess: how to jump out of the bathtub. The first time, I was so surprised that I went "WAH!" and he got so startled that he fell back down again, but the second time he made it up and ran up my arm.

Al-rat watched jealously, got into position and sprang, only to scrabble at the top and slither back down again. (Twice.)

Renji

oyceter: Two of my rats in a tissue box (rat)
I took Ren in to the vet yesterday because he hadn't been doing too well, and they called to say he passed away this morning.

I feel bad for having favorites, because I love all my rats to pieces, but Ren was one of my best guys. Wee Ren used to terrify me by climbing up the window shades; once he made it to the top, half-terrified and half-insanely-pleased with himself, and I had to rescue him because he couldn't figure out a way back down. The times I slept on the sofa, he would escape from the cage only to sit on my chest to wake me up and make me play with him every other hour. Other times, he'd escape from the cage only to sit under the coffee table two or three feet away, completely unsure of how to get back. He got through surgery and being a Frankenrat, and even though he still had stitches, the first time I let him play with Bya and Ruki again, he tried to pounce on Bya.

He would poke you with his nose to beg for scritches and just lie there on his side while you stroked his cheek, and when he got older, he would just lie in my lap or on my chest and hang out with me. He was generally just an awesome little rattie.

Rat update

oyceter: Two of my rats in a tissue box (rat)
Dear Ed- and Al-rat,

I understand you are young and crazy rats who immensely enjoy burrowing under the rat blankets and shedding fur all over my bed. But I have never had rats who liked to chew things as much as you guys before! Chewing blankets and occasionally my clothes is an acceptable risk, as is trying to eat my course readers or notebooks. But I draw the line at Laura Kinsale's Seize the Fire (the out-of-print cover too, luridly romance-y though it is), and library books are a definite NO.

Also, please to not be staring at me when I yell at you like I'm cruelly starving you and you can only get nutrition from chomping on book spines. I do not believe you!

No love (ok, I lie, still with much love but also much irritation),
Oyce

PS. The computer cable? Even more of a NO. // note to self, buy electrical tape

Ren-rat is getting balder by the day, and his hind toes are now pretty much always curled in on themselves. Amazingly, he is still a pretty feisty rat for his age, as he is perfectly willing to launch himself off the sofa, into assorted bowls, and out of his cage and off into the wilderness that is the living room floor, which seems fine to him but gives me heart attacks.

I have been feeling gray and tired lately (probably because of the gray weather and the lack of sleep, amazingly), so here are some ratty things that have cheered me up!

My First YouTube! Or: Ed-rat cannot get enough food. My favorite parts are when he has one food block in his mouth and somehow thinks he can fit another one in, despite the fact that some are almost as big as his head! The huffy noises in the video are me trying not to laugh.

I feel I named them appropriately, as Ed-rat is frenetic and crazy and smaller, and then Al-rat will pop his head out, see what Ed is doing, take a lab block, and then go back to sleep and ignore his weird brother.

More ratty things (not my rats though) )

Wow, I'm late in writing things up! This year's Thanksgiving was held at the apartment of one of my sister's friends; my sister, her two friends, and I made most of the food. Thankfully, this year we did not have to battle lumpy cream or curtains as oven mitts, but there were other catastrophes instead!

I took the opportunity to make salty egg and pumpkin (really kabocha squash, but Chinese doesn't seem to distinguish between pumpkin and squash). Alas, this resulted in my nearly chopping off my finger... twice! The first time, I escaped with only a bit of skin nicked, but the second time, the knife went fairly deep, I bled all over the place, and my sister and her friend had to make an emergency run to see what drug stores were open on Thanksgiving to buy rubbing alcohol and bandaids. Gah. I think this is not my year, medically. At least I now have a scar on my left index finger to match the rat bite scar on my right index finger?

After we ate dinner, I went back to the kitchen to attempt lemon souffle! I know I can make chocolate souffle fairly consistently (at least, when I remember to turn on the oven...), but I haven't tried any other kind. Of course, there weren't enough ramekins or ramekins of the right kind. And my sister's friend's apartment was woefully underequipped. ("Do you have a spatula?" "Uh. We have a wooden rice scooper." "How about a zester?" "Zester...?" "... A grater then?" "Er...")

I would like to note that making lemon zest without a grater is extremely annoying and I nearly sliced off another bit of finger while doing so.

When I started my recipe, I melted some butter over the stove and started stirring in 3/4 cups of flour. As it clumped and started turning into what presumably would be roux, my sister's friend C turned to me and asked, "Er. Are you sure it's supposed to look like this?"

"Maybe I add more liquid later?" I asked. After we had stirred in a cup or so of milk, only to have it be rapidly soaked up by the flour with no noticeable difference in texture, I decided there may have been some mistake. I mean, I know the souffle is thick, but that doesn't mean it should be solid! I couldn't find the recipe online, so I eventually had to go for a new recipe.

Thankfully, the souffles ended up doing well... or at least 75% of them! The fourth souffle had deflated into a sad, slightly lemony hockey puck, and while the texture was somewhat cake-like, it was dense, unflavorful, and not at all light and fluffy with melty lemon curd at the bottom like the rest.

Every single time I make souffle, I wonder why I go through all the trouble, because really, can flavored batter and egg whites taste so good as the make it worth the effort? And every time I take a successful souffle out of the oven, I remember why I do it (aside from the challenge and ensuing self-congratulations, of course, provided that I turn on the oven...). The lemon souffles were delightfully light and delicate on top, with a tiny crust of caramelized sugar (from buttering and sugaring the insides of the ramekins), and the texture gradually gets denser and more liquid until you get to the bottom, which is rich and buttery and eggy and very much like a hot lemon curd. They are amazing, and I am going to try them again for Christmas.

... Of course, this will be very interesting, as I have no idea as to how equipped or underequipped our kitchen is for making French desserts. And we have no ramekins. And I will have to convert everything to metric.

But this time, I will turn on the oven and only put in a teaspoon or so of flour!

The rat-sitter has come, earlier than planned due to unforeseen circumstances, and now the apartment is bereft of rats. It feels rather empty and lonely, and I keep planning to study with small rats scampering about (or a large rat splooged out lazily, depending on if it is Ed and Al or Ren), and they are not there!

Still, it is good to have one more thing wrapped up before heading off to Taiwan on Tues.

Argh! I am so sick of studying already! It is so bad that I have actually started my Yuletide story as a means of procrastination.

In other news, I've attempted snuggling with the rats on the sofa while studying, as opposed to on the bed. Ren cuddles nicely, especially if I scritch his cheeks or behind his ears; if I stop, he'll keep his eyes closed and stay still for a few seconds in hopes that I'll resume again shortly. But after a while, he gets bored, makes a flying leap off the couch, and dashes to freedom.

I think I have aptly renamed Ed and Al, as Al has grown much bigger than Ed and can probably still beat him up if he so chooses, but doesn't often choose to. Ed, on the other hand, is small and crazy full of energy; while Al is curled up under the covers, Ed is scampering around the bed and sniffing at everything. On the other hand, if I drag Al out alone, he starts at all the scary noises and then stuffs himself inside my sweatshirt sleeve. This is somewhat awkward, as he refuses to come back out, so I have been walking around the apartment for the past half hour with a rat curled up by my forearm.

People! Entertain me! Or else I will just spam LJ more!

ETA: Spoilers for Demon Ororon in comments! (Most is spoiler texted out, but I got my code wrong, so mine is not.)

  1. I think I am renaming the rats so that the brown rat is Ed-rat and the white hooded one is Al-rat. They're both still very shy, but the brown one runs around and sniffs at everything and jumps away and jumps back again and runs around more when the white one likes snoozing under the blankets until dragged out by his brother or me. They are still so adorable!

  2. I have finally started taking advantage of academic library access! JSTOR! BAS! Access to back issues of Publisher's Weekly! I already have several books out on ILL so I can try and catch up with manga scholarship, particularly anything that focuses on gender.

  3. Any book recs for books by POC about food? Fictional or non-fictional is fine, have already read Fortune Cookie Chronicles, Serve the People, and plan on reading Madhur Jaffrey and David Masumoto.

  4. East Bay people! Tell me about your favorite restaurants!

I've decided to name the new rats Ed and Al! I was really debating between that and Doumeki and Watanuki for a while, but I wanted names that wouldn't be mangled by the vet. And while I thought Doumeki and Watanuki were appropriate, I was trying to train the guys to come when I made a certain noise by feeding them peas. Al picked up on it in about three seconds while Ed would come and somehow not figure out how to get the pea and then try to grab it from Al. Not necessarily entirely in character, but I can totally see them squabbling like the Elrics. And yes, I totally pronounce it "Edo" and "Aru" in my head.

The unhappy news is that though the rat bite swelling from last week went down, it started up again over the weekend. I was just going to try to wait it out, since it wasn't too bad, but I woke up around five this morning and my finger was really hurting and it was so swollen that the skin was taut. Skipped class to go to urgent care, felt like a total idiot for doing so and wondered if I was overreacting, got triaged into urgent care and felt reassured about overreacting, now have appointment to see a hand specialist this evening to see if it needs to be drained. Please have them say no! I fear sharp objects!

Am now armed with antibiotics and Advil.

New rats!

Tue, Oct. 7th, 2008 12:01 am
oyceter: Two of my rats in a tissue box (rat)
I have new rats! Ren is still very unhappy about them, and every time I bring him out, he suspiciously sniffs at the blankets and tries to reassert his control over the territory. Also, they try to peek at him through the bars of the cage, and he doesn't do anything, lures them in, and then violently lunges.

*sigh* Maybe he is just too old for new rattie companions.

But the new rats are incredibly cute! They are so sweet and shy and friendly! It took a long time for Ruki and Ren and Bya to warm to me, but these guys actually jump toward me when they get frightened sometimes! And they climb all over me! The hooded one is a little more courageous than the brown one, who is very skittish and shy. The hooded one will amazingly sit still for the camera while the brown guy runs around sniffing everything and jumping at every other noise. They aren't very licky yet, but I can't tell if that's because they're still shy, or if they just don't do that.

So, people, help me with names! I was originally thinking of Hikaru and Kaoru from Ouran, but these guys are way too sweet to be the Hitachiin twins. I'm also contemplating Ed and Al (the new rats are brothers). Any other suggestions? Doesn't have to be from anime or manga or even a fictional source at all.

New ratties!

Sat, Oct. 4th, 2008 11:13 pm
oyceter: teruterubouzu default icon (Default)
I have new ratties! One is a berkshire agouti (brownish with a white tummy, looks a lot like Ruki) and one is a hooded agouti (brownish head and stripe on back, white everywhere else).

Unfortunately, I tried to let Ren sniff at them when I was holding him. He was very well-behaved at first, and then he lunged and sank his teeth in my finger. Better my finger than the new rats at least...

Alas, my finger started dripping blood (any recommendations on how to get blood out of carpet?), and then it started to swell up. In a panic, I attempted to locate my new insurance information and find a doctor that was open on the weekend. Let me just say, typing is really hard when one is attempting to not bleed all over the sofa and one cannot move one's right index finger.

Thankfully, I found a nearby urgent care, they amazingly located my insurance info with just my name and the name of the insurance company, and then the doctor ruled out infection, saying that infections just didn't happen that fast. His best guess is that I'm having an allergic reaction. Right now, the swelling has spread so my index finger looks like a giant sausage, and about a fourth of my palm is swollen as well. Also, it freaking HURTS.

The worst bit is, I can only really blame myself for getting between a rat fight and for trying to introduce Ren too soon.
