I've decided to name the new rats Ed and Al! I was really debating between that and Doumeki and Watanuki for a while, but I wanted names that wouldn't be mangled by the vet. And while I thought Doumeki and Watanuki were appropriate, I was trying to train the guys to come when I made a certain noise by feeding them peas. Al picked up on it in about three seconds while Ed would come and somehow not figure out how to get the pea and then try to grab it from Al. Not necessarily entirely in character, but I can totally see them squabbling like the Elrics. And yes, I totally pronounce it "Edo" and "Aru" in my head.

The unhappy news is that though the rat bite swelling from last week went down, it started up again over the weekend. I was just going to try to wait it out, since it wasn't too bad, but I woke up around five this morning and my finger was really hurting and it was so swollen that the skin was taut. Skipped class to go to urgent care, felt like a total idiot for doing so and wondered if I was overreacting, got triaged into urgent care and felt reassured about overreacting, now have appointment to see a hand specialist this evening to see if it needs to be drained. Please have them say no! I fear sharp objects!

Am now armed with antibiotics and Advil.

Gah! ::prays against needles::

In the meantime, you might try soaking your hand in warm/hot soapy water. I used to get infections fairly often in my nail beds, and my (doctor) father had me do this. It softens the skin, and you can then get the wound to drain on its own, without any poky things.

I second this suggestion. It won't hurt, and it might help. A hot moist towel will work similarly and may be more convenient.

As someone who sticks herself with stuff a lot, I endorse this too - hot moist towels (and not messing with it!) are a good way to help your body get the infection/inflammation out on its own.

If they do have to poke it though, you will feel a LOT better afterwards.

The rats sound so cute, I love the idea of the one stealing the others' pea!

Oh no! You were definitely right to go straight to urgent care. (Adrian even tagged "pain that wakes you up from sleep" as a sign to go to the ER.)

definitely time to go to the doctor, also, i would suggest warm slightly salty water for soaking.

Well, if it's infected, you don't want to dilate the blood vessels and spread it around. I join the Yay! Medicine crowd. Signed, once had to have hand surgery for a cat bite.

Hopefully the hand thing is resolved by now. Yikes!

I love the Ed and Al story. What happens if you call Ed a bean?

Owwwwwwww your poor hand. Good for you for getting treatment.

It helps to breathe out while sharp objects are being applied.

They are clearly well-named rats. Woe for your finger!
