And in response to my desperate flailing for kickass female assassin types, [livejournal.com profile] __angela__ points out the Elektra trailer. Gah! Marial arts! Sais! At least two female fighter types! *big grin* This hankering has not been helped out by watching Morgaine's "She Bangs" Faith and Buffy vid about ten times in the past week, because Buffy and Faith fighting! Mmmm.

Had dim sum with [livejournal.com profile] fannishly and one of the boy's friends, and I am now very happily full. After having about three days worth of turkey sandwiches, it was nice to have dim sum as a change of pace. Though the turkey/mashed potato/avocado/brie sandwich is also very good. Mmm. Mashed potatoes... You know you have been somewhat overzealous in your sandwich making when the thing doesn't actually fit in your mouth.

More Incredibles links:
[livejournal.com profile] fannishly has a review with spoilers, with connections to HP as well.
[livejournal.com profile] arethusa2 connects it with fandom (spoilers) and the double-edged swords of competition and expectation.

!!! Thanks so much to the person who gave me more LJ time!

And since I'm collecting them already:

[livejournal.com profile] selenak writes on Powers and Principalities, a book on what a realistic world with superheroes may look like.

Probably linked elsewhere, but since I'm collecting them now: Christian Science Monitor on Ayn Rand, Nietzsche, and The Incredibles.

And [livejournal.com profile] scrollgirl thinks about Spiderman (the movie) and egalitarianism here.

I'm still sort of grumpy because both Targets I went to were sold out of the on-sale Buffy S7 DVDs. Grrrrrr.

But I found my own copy of Ursula Synge's Swan's Wing, as last seen recced by [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija, during my weekly bookstore trawl. They have a second copy there as well for $2, if anyone still wants it. And I saw two copies of Justine Larbaelstier's The Battle of the Sexes in Science Fiction at the bookstore, but I wasn't sure if I should get it or not. Anyone have an opinion on it?

[livejournal.com profile] londonkds has much the same problems as I did with The Incredibles but expresses it ten times better ;). Here's the original post, with heavy spoilers, along with an interesting discussion in a later post that led me to the conclusion that many comics seem rather tech-phobic in nature, particularly if the human is willingly using technology to modify himself (see also the sand guy in Hellboy). Maybe it ties into a rather SFnal theme of the fear of the unclear lines that divide human from cyborg from robot? And another here with references to "Chosen" in Buffy. And even more on superheroes from [livejournal.com profile] scrollgirl. May have missed a few links here and there... feel free to drop a note in comments.

ETA: Not on The Incredibles, but [livejournal.com profile] fannishly also writes in the same vein re: human and technological merging here. (now here with added discussion)

ETA2: And now it's an article in the NY Times (use BugMeNot).

ETA3: [livejournal.com profile] selenak on Powers and Principalities, a take on superheroes in a realistic world.

I supported two independent presses and three independent bookstores this weekend ^_^. Aka, my book spending is still out of control.

Busy weekend. I ended up going to San Francisco yesterday to see Pat Murphy, Debbie Notkins and Karen Joy Fowler talk about the Tiptree Award. I didn't know very much about the Tiptree Award previously, so it was a great fun listening to them talk about how they created the award. And bake sales. I am amused that Bruce Sterling baked cookies. And I didn't realize I would want to take notes until they started talking, so I ended up not being able to. However, I'm not quite sure how new the information would be to people on LJ, given that it seems a good deal of people have been to Wiscon before and probably know all about the Tiptree? Anyhow, I ended up buying the new Tiptree Award anthology and getting that, along with Fowler's Artificial Things and Sarah Canary, signed. I was particularly excited because they mentioned that Kara Dalkey's Japanese Snow Queen story that was in Firebirds, along with a new translation of "Snow Queen" and another short story based on it. One of my favorite fairy tales. Of course, after hearing that, I had to buy the book immediately. I also ended up finding Teresa Nielsen Hayden's Making Book. I did feel rather awkward after the panel, because it seemed like most of the people who had gone there knew each other and were quite comfortable standing around chatting. I ended up sort of hiding behind stacks of books. I'm not very good at the whole social thing, so I keep flip-flopping around as to whether I should try going to a con or not.

Also ended up watching The Incredibles. Read more... )

And today I met [livejournal.com profile] fannishly, and we talked about many things ranging from the joys of Angel, Asian mothers complaining about people being too fat, depression and LJ! Yay, fandom folk from Taiwan! There should be a club ;).
