Ok, maybe I don't completely mean the letter I just wrote because I am weak-willed to the power of manga!

I may casually keep reading this series, as it is set in a magical world and there haven't been too many sporky female rivalry moments yet. Yet. But I am on to Watase Yuu's evil ways, and I have no doubt that it will eventually show up!

Also, the series has much less high school shenanigans than the others, given that it's set in an imaginary world.

I have to admit, I still want femslash from the warrior-who-turns-into-a-girl.

Otherwise, while the additional warriors were somewhat interesting, I am still not into the series, largely because I want a female character who is not a) sweet and innocent and determined to save people no matter what, b) evil and emotionally manipulative, or c) actually a guy.

Why yes, I am STILL behind on book-logging! And instead of actually writing a review that I am supposed to, I am instead doing half-assed reviews of other things.

Dear Watase Yuu,

I am not buying your manga again, no matter how cute or well-drawn or cracktastic they are. Even a naked guy in a box lined with pink tissue paper will not appease me! Do not attempt to deceive me again! I am on to your evil ways, and I know that every single non-heroine female will turn evil and stab the heroine in the back and there will be stupid, stupid romantic misunderstsandings.

Even Soshi, with his cute glasses and quiet attempts to take care of Riiko, will not persuade me.

No longer your pawn,
Oyce

I swear, this time I will stand firm against the lure of Soshi and cute chibi drawings, because Watase Yuu does the same thing. All the time. I know this! And yet, I keep reading it. To recap this volume and pretty much every single Watase Yuu series:

- The heroine is sweet and innocent despite many provocations to the contrary
- The heroine's best friend/sister/random female character is evil and hates the heroine and attempts to sabotage all her romances
- The heroine is the beloved of several men, all of whom are deeply attractive
- The heroine bounces from one guy to another as multiple romantic complications ensue
- The heroine is caught in compromising positions with assorted guys despite being completely innocent
- Everyone turns against the heroine except said romantic interests

Alice finds out that words have a great deal of power when her resentfulness banishes her sister Mayura into the Mara. She ends up studying to be a Lotis Master with her crush object, Kyo. Unfortunately, part of the problem is that Kyo is Mayura's crush object as well. More plot summary here.

While I like the emphasis on words and their power, I'm still annoyed by the love triangle of DOOM, by the random obstacles Watase keeps putting up between Kyo and Alice, and completely random instances of nakedness. I mean, usually only the first annoys me that much, but I've been reading so much Watase Yuu lately that it's getting very obvious what her kinks are. And sadly, mine don't quite match up, particularly when one of the giant climactic moments is a near rape followed by a compromising position followed by infamy at school.

I liked meeting the other Lotis masters from different countries, but in the end, I think the story just didn't grab me. I didn't care enough about Alice and her quest to save Mayura, and the romance between Alice and Kyo mainly annoyed me. I think it's because of the love triangle of DOOM.

Also, I wish that the people of color, all too rare in manga, actually got tragic backstories and whatnot like the cute Scandinavian guy did.

I would just like to note that the cover of vol. 1 is a picture of a clearly naked boy in an opened box, surrounded by tissue paper. The obvious cheerfulness of said naked boy and the strange sweetness of the pink and the tissue paper are pretty indicative of what the manga is like, so far.

In other words: Yes! Watase Yuu has come out with a cute and romantic manga series on sex toy robots! I'd hang my head in embarrassment for liking this, except... ♥♥♥♥!!!!

The cute! It kills!

Izawa Riiko keeps getting rejected by guys and keeps ordering stuff like breast-enhancing machine things through the mail. The two suddenly and fortuitously (sort of) come together when she gets the opportunity to try out the Nightly Lover 1 series.

Enter naked boy. Enter extremely cute naked boy (to be named Tenjo Night) who would be sexy if he weren't so absolutely puppy-dog-like and endearing. Not to say that puppy-dog-like and endearing isn't sexy, but Night is just so absolutely innocent, even when he's whipping his clothes off every other panel.

I think I was howling with laughter every other page because Night would just be like, "Oh no! You feel sad!.... Let's have sex!" and off went the clothes for the umpteenth time. It's just that he was so cheerful about it!

And when Riiko tells him he's got to pretend to not be her boyfriend at school, he asks, "You mean, I can't hug you or kiss you or take off my clothes?"

He also very cheerfully likes standing on top of extremely high things and posing.

And then, of course, there is Soshi, Riiko's next-door neighbor and childhood friend, whose glasses and whose somewhat grumpy yet very cute concern for Riiko had me awwwww-ing uncontrollably. I hug him and kiss him and call him George! I mean.. Soshi!

Sadly, Watase has to bring in a female rival in the series, which annoys the hell out of me. So... I'll probably keep reading if Soshi still gets to feature prominently, but if said female rivalry gets even worse, yuck!

I picked this up because both [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink and [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija mentioned that they liked it, despite me never having read Fushigi Yuugi. Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden is apparently a prequel of the events in the original FY, but so far, it seems to be ok that I haven't read the original yet.

Okuda Takiko is a young girl living in Taisho Japan (1920s). Her mother is sick, her father is lost in his world of scholarship and woefully neglects his family. Takiko seems pretty cool -- she learns naginata (some weapon that's a long stick with a blade on top) at school and doesn't seem too irritating. Anyhow, Taki basically feels abandoned by everyone she loves in the real world and ends up being sucked into a mysterious book that her father has translated from Chinese.

I have no idea how close this is to the original FY.

Regardless... Taki is apparently the mystical priestess of Genbu and needs to find the seven celestial warriors to save the world. I personally don't care too much about the prophecy plot/plot coupon type thing, but the warriors she has been finding so far are really cute.

Also, one of the warriors turns into a girl when he uses his powers! Ahh shoujo manga, how I love you and your on crack gender-bending devices!

So far all the warriors seem to be men -- are there ever cool girl warriors? Or does that completely defeat the point of having seven guys in love with Taki? I want a cool girl warrior, damnit, and warrior-who-turns-into-girl doesn't count.

I am also deriving great joy from the setting in Japan! It's not quite Meiji Japan, but it's close enough! I really like the little historical notes that Watase puts in the side, down to Taki's hakama and boots being historically accurate, along with her naginata classes. (I adore hakama. That was the best part about taking kendo.)

Only... obviously the majority of the story isn't going to be taking place in Taisho Japan, since it's in the Universe of the Four Gods. Oh well. It is one of my favorite historical periods though, just because it's so interesting seeing the blend of what's thought of as "traditional Japanese culture" and "Western culture."

(am putting surnames first because I am stubborn like that and adding in extra vowels because I am too lazy to make macrons)

Seno Alice is a quiet girl with a crush on cute upperclassman Wakamiya Kyou. Her sister Mayura is pretty and vivacious and gets all the attention; Alice generally tends to suffer in silence and isn't quite sure how to speak out. Mayura isn't cruel, just careless and a bit unaware, but I think she means well.

Anyhow, Kyou is in Mayura's archery club, Mayura also has a crush on Kyou, assorted things happen, and Alice finds a rabbit with a strange bracelet. Said rabbit turns up later and proclaims that Alice can be a Lotis Master, who is apparently someone who can do powerful things with words.

Obviously a lot of this is set up for future tension. I think the series could be interesting, what with the emphasis on the power of words and all, but while I'm somewhat interested in the characters, another part of me is fleeing like mad from the impending love triangle of doom (doom, I say!). Sibling love triangles = six billion times worse. Speaking of which, I'm not quite sure why I always use six billion as a good round number, but I do.

So... maybe I will keep reading if future volumes keep showing up at the library, but I don't think I will be rabidly purchasing this one. Clean art though, which is nice.
