Argh!

Have I mentioned that I love knitting? I take it back! I hate knitting! I particularly hate my stupid toe-up Jaywalker that has 68 -- yes! 68! -- rows for the gusset increase and the heel turn. My gauge is 10 rows/inch! That is a 6.8 inch heel turn! Minus 1.5 inches if you assume that half of the heel turn will be on the leg side, but still! I would have to start increasing 5.3 inches from my heel!

I mean, my feet are big, but even so, having a heel that is actually longer than the foot of my sock seems a little weird.

Ok, I don't actually hate knitting. I sort of more hate myself for not carefully charting out all the rows required for the gusset increases beforehand while knitting two socks at a time and making pretty damned good progress, if I say so myself.

Of course, that is all moot, now that one sock has been torn back to the toe and the other lies there forlornly, waiting for me to decide if I should tear it back or not.

And because I was doing two at a time, I really do not want to wait to relax out the kinks in the yarn. So now my reknit sock is less pretty. But I am too irritated to start over for the billionth time. But I waffle because it is my beautiful Blue Moon Socks That Rock yarn. But -- billionth time!

In conclusion: #$(*&$@#)(#$!!!!!

Full titles: Knitting Rules!: The Yarn Harlot's Bag of Knitting Tricks
Casts Off: The Yarn Harlot's Guide to the Land of Knitting

See, if I procrastinate long enough on blogging books, I can combine things into one entry!

Even though all three books cover roughly the same ground, I liked these two better than Pearl-McPhee's Yarn Harlot, largely because the less narrative, more listy approach worked well. These two have things like "Five Best TV Shows for Knitting" or "How to Start a Knitting Flamewar," as opposed to the mini essays on things that the first book had. Knitting Rules! is slightly more technical; Pearl-McPhee includes some very basic patterns for a sock, a hat, and etc. Casts Off is written in the guise of a tour book to Knitting. If you aren't a knitter, you probably don't care about reading either, if you are, you may not care that the territory covered in both books is roughly the same.

Though if you're a non-knitter who's a little interested or just wants a look at what's going on, I'd rec Casts Off out of the three. The guide book format is sometimes twee, but it's fun; it's less technical than Knitting Rules!; and the essay format of Yarn Harlot didn't work that well for me. Also, funny lists are easier to read.

I forgot; I actually have been doing a few things aside from watching Honey and Clover. Or, more accurately, while watching Honey and Clover, as the tatami kimono pattern is relatively brainless and thereby good anime knitting.

I finally made it to my local knitting group! Um, well, my third local knitting group, that is. I had much fun, ate chicken katsu musubi (must be brave and have spam musubi next time), knit more sock, and learned about the following patterns....

[livejournal.com profile] telophase, I was thinking of you and how you always find wretched knitting patterns that you would never ever wear. Not that these are wearable, but I thought you'd enjoy the sheer cracktasticness.

I present: the snatchel and the beanis.

Knit them together for handy impromptu sex ed and/or anatomy sessions! Rib the snatchel for further stretchiness! And be able to tell your friends that you've indulged in fisting while just fishing for change in your purse! (jokes courtesy of aforementioned knitting group, as I was too busy trying not to snort rice up my nose)

Mail!

oyceter: teruterubouzu default icon (Default)
I've been having some exciting mail days lately!

  1. [livejournal.com profile] yhlee! The 2006 Vividcon DVD arrived! EEEEEE! I thought it would be lost forever, as it was sent to my old address, but good old USPS worked its magic and rerouted it and I have it! That totally made my week, and I am planning on hunkering down on the couch with easy knitting to watch "Fix You" and "Have You Heard" and oh so many other excellent vids on my tv.

  2. ROCKIN' SOCK CLUB OMG JOY! Um. Yes. It is quite possible that I have been bitten by the sock bug even though I uh... have yet to finish my first pair. But that's because the foot is in pure stockinette, and it is boring me to death, and I want to get to the cool parts like the heel! I started knitting Grumperina's Roza's socks from IK Spring 07, but I got really bored with brioche stitch. So I tore it out and started toe-up Happy Socks. Except it's taking a while to get to the lace, and once I got past the figure-eight toe (so cool! so proud of self for figuring it out!) and the increases, it is stockinette for what feels like miiiiiiiiiiles. At least it's entertaining watching the yarn self-stripe.

Also, I have decided that I can indeed do dpns, but I don't particularly enjoy them and want my magic loop again. I have also decided toe-up is the way to go, as I can try it on as I knit and knit without fear of running out of yarn before finishing the toe!

Wait, got distracted again, meant to talk about Rockin' Sock Club. Anyway, I am not completely in love with the colorway, but the pattern looks cool. But I have decided to knit some other sock with the yarn, as I don't like how it pools on other people's and use some other sock yarn on the Inside Out pattern. More news later...

  3. Wild Adaptor 1-4 in Japanese from [livejournal.com profile] vom_marlowe, joy!

The only sad thing is that my Sundara yarn has not come yet. This wouldn't be so tragic, given that I will forever have more stash than I have projects, except for the fact that the tatami kimono pattern has also not yet come argh want to knit it now have beautiful yarn sitting in closet woe. Am emailing Sundara to check.

Um, also, are people really bored by my obsessive knitting posts? I figure they probably don't make much sense if you don't knit...

I haven't been reading much lately, as a) I haven't been sleeping well lately and therefore have been falling asleep in the middle of books and b) Remix has been eating up my time. But really, it's not like I don't have enough hobbies to fill up all my time and then some anyway...
oyceter: (oyceter 2)
  1. Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] jinian, apparently it is World Rat Day! And to think, I almost missed it and was not going to play with the ratties today in favor of getting more sock knitting done.

  2. I picked up stitches for the first time ever! OMG, cannot believe I have been knitting seriously for two entire years and only now have picked up stitches. It really says something about how much I enjoy finishing, huh? Also, I started knitting my first sock! It's so sad! After knitting so long with Crystal Palace Kid Merino, which is about as thick as thread, only with a lot of fuzzy stuff around it, sock yarn feels so fat and substantial!

  3. ZOMG! Blue Moon Fiber Arts Rockin' Sock Club had some extra open spaces and I insanely went for it! So more socks in the future! Also, eep, what did I get myself into?

  4. Still have not made it to the other other knitting group, as real life keeps getting in the way, and since the mom arrives tomorrow, I cannot go tomorrow or next Sunday. Maybe next week.

  5. Went to swing for the first time in a few weeks today, and despite it being live band night, there still weren't a lot of people. I talked to some others, and I think everyone went somewhere else. Sigh. Alas, that somewhere else is on Tuesday, and I have knitting every other Tuesday, except it sounds like all the fun dancers are going to the Tuesday one. And Skeevy Guy 1 and Skeevy Guy 2 are apparently becoming regulars at normal place, which is losing its fun vibe, as fewer and fewer people go dancing. Possibly I will try out the new place, except the week after next.

  6. Must buy textbooks! Must not forget about classes!

  7. Must read more! Must blog books! Must watch more TV! Woe, why can't I just download knowledge into my brain, come to think of it?

  8. It is entirely possible that I have a few too many hobbies and entirely too little money and time to support them all. But... they're all so fun! Also, I met some dancers who knit today. My spheres collide!

oyceter: Stack of books with text "mmm... books!" (mmm books)
I'm sure that all the knitters reading this have heard of Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, the Yarn Harlot in the blogosphere. So I write this for any non-knitters who are curious as to why yarn seems to have taken up a substantial chunk of my brain and my free time.

This is a collection of little essays on the life of a knitter, and not just any knitter, but a knitter who obsessively stashes, who starts new projects without finishing old ones, who is incapable of walking past a yarn store with a sale, and whom many may think of as certifiably insane.

Aka, substitute "books" for "yarn," and I think you know what kind of a hobby compulsion lifestyle this is.

I don't know if I'd love this if I weren't already a knitter, but I enjoy reading about people being obsessively interested in the assorted things that interest them, be it books, pop science, math or yarn. And Pearl-McPhee helps by carefully explaining the secrets of knitting to those who Do Not Knit, including the perils of squirrels, moths, and other threats to woolly goodness; the all-consuming nature of a yarn stash and how to hide it in the freezer, in kitchen cupboards, and, when desperate, in the piano; the questionable joy of deciding to knit fifteen different people Christmas presents in a few months and going insane every year; the heartbreak of losing one double-pointed needle and thereby rendering the entire set unusable; and, most of all, the siren call of string on pointy sticks. Or one long cord with two pointy ends, depending on what kind of a knitter you are.

If you read them too quickly (note: in a few hours straight like me), you may start growing a little frustrated with Pearl-McPhee's tone in a few of the essays, and sometimes her attempts at being heartwarming don't quite work with me. But she's still hilarious, and even though we may forever disagree on the merits of circulars vs. dpns, she gets it.

And best of all, she tells it back to you, so that you, too, understand just how making loops with yarn on pointy things can be so satisfying that it can reduce you to near homicide (ratticide?) when your stash is threatened.

So I'd rec this even if you don't knit, just because Pearl-McPhee understands obsession and a lifelong love, even if hers is yarn and yours is anime or manga or books or fandom.

oyceter: Two of my rats in a tissue box (rat)
So I was going to post on going salsa dancing for the first time, or on expertise as a measure of effort vs. talent, or a giant squee-full post on The Virtu, which ate my brain yesterday.

And then I woke up to find.... the cage door opened.

Holy fucking shit! I thought, still rather muddled from extreme allergies and waking up.

Bya poked his head out of the hammock and sleepily sniffed at me. At least he was still true to type and in the cage.

And then I looked at the room. Shredded paper and shredded random other things everywhere! GAH! I thought.

GAAAAAAH OMG YOU HORRIBLE EVIL RATS! I thought, as I saw the chewed holes in [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija's bag of tatami kimono yarn, complete with random strands of yarn peeking through and one lonely ball sitting outside the bag, label torn to pieces. (fear not, thankfully the yarn itself is safe, no thanks to the rats)

Despite extreme anger, I managed to actually check the six million electrical cords in the room to discover that there was no fried rat body there, thank god and no thanks to their little rodent teeth.

And then I saw it.

My yarn! My yarn from my stash! My yarn from my stash that hangs in those sweater holder things you hang up in your closet! My yarn ON THE FLOOR IN A MESS!

"RUKI*! I am going to KILL YOU!" I yelled.

There were a few half-shredded labels, but most importantly... my yarn from the very top-most shelf was on the floor. My Claudia's hand-painted pure silk gorgeously dyed laceweight. My ArtFibers silk. My Jaeger Zephyr silk-merino laceweight. My Cherry Tree Hill hand-dyed sock yarn.

I raced over to carefully pet them and coo over them to make sure the evil rat had not mangled them, particularly the Claudia's silk laceweight which I will not even mention how much I paid for because it was just that gorgeous.

Ruki should thank his little ratty stars that my yarn is largely undamaged.

Then I raced around in a mad rush, trying to figure out which rats were still on the loose and if (heaven forbid) Ruki had made it out of the room and was currently terrorizing the rest of the house.

At that, several sleepy ratty heads poked out of the hammock. Ruki didn't even wake up when I poked at him to make sure it was actually him and not some cleverly constructed decoy.

* I am 99% certain that this is Ruki's doing, as a) he habitually and consistently attempts to escape from the bathtub and b) the other times the cage door has "accidentally" popped open (I now suspect Ruki of finessing this escape and others), I have panicked, only to find: Bya still sitting his fat rat butt in the cage, too lazy to even investigate the world outside; Ren huddled on the sofa or under the coffee table, adventurous enough to find places he remembers but then scared beyond measure at the wide world and unable to find his way back to the cage (which, by the way, is about three feet away); and Ruki. Ruki, running down the hallway, not just feet, but meters away from the rat room, much less the cage. Or Ruki, escaped from the rat room to the bathroom, where he plays circus balancing tricks on the edge of my laundry basket.

I knew I shouldn't have named him after Rukia. It is quite clear where his personality comes from. Also, I am certain that he knows he is the cutest of the three rats and takes mad advantage of this whenever he can.

  1. Done with finals, yay! *collapses* I think I did ok, but of course, I may very well have overlooked the completely obvious, especially with regards to combinatorics. But who cares now! Two weeks of no class! I anticipate much anime watching.

  2. Tatami kimono people, I checked out more options at the local yarn store and will be posting about that later. [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix was also nice enough to volunteer, so if any of you don't want to wait for me to knit something up, feel free to email her. Just let me know so I won't pester you for yarn and whatnot. I've already bought the pattern and am waiting for them to ship it to me.

  3. In rattie news, Ren has somehow managed to lose not just one, but both of his upper incisors. I am just as boggled as you. I told [livejournal.com profile] rilina this, and got a tentative: "How smart... uh... So... rat-wise, how does Ren rate on the intelligence scale?"

    "Er," I said. "Er, yeah...."

I am hoping that they grow back, as the poor guy can't eat anything too solid right now, and I'm hoping his lower incisors don't grow sideways or something completely wonky like that. He is currently on an emergency diet of quinoa, as I had some leftover in the pantry. Enough protein for humans, probably good for rats, I figure.

    But really. Both teeth? WTF?!

There are knitbloggers in my area! Wow!

I found out at my library knitting circle (also, someone asked me if I blogged and said she may have found my entry last week. If so, hi!). But yes! Local knitbloggers!

I mean, having knitting groups is awesome, but it is extra awesome to have a knitblogging group because I have been obsessively lurking in the knitblog universe for quite some time now, and it's a habit that is somewhat difficult to explain to my non-blogging, non-internet-addicted knitting circles.

Also, I so want Sundara cherry blossom yarn because of the whole sakura of DOOM thing. I mean... I could knit sakura socks of DOOM! How awesome is that? And I worked some extra hours this week. Hrm....

Of course, then I would be breaking my yarn diet.

I am currently on a book diet and a yarn diet but surviving ok, given the size of my stash (both yarn and books), though I am not counting manga series I am currently into for my book diet. Ergo, still keeping an eye out for Emma 3.

I am still a little boggled by the wonderfulness of a knitting circle at the library because, well: books! yarn! books and yarn! books and yarn and books and yarn! Now if they only had swing dancing there after hours, it would be a giant combination of all my current hobbies!

I finally up and went to the library Teen Zone knitting circle again (I stole Noro from them last time). I meant to bring the scarf I knit from the stolen Noro and give it to someone, except I still haven't woven in ends or blocked the thing yet. I'm good at finishing projects... just not at finishing the finishing.

Lo and behold! More people there! I generally just sat in the corner and felt nervous as conversation went on elsewhere, but the nice librarian running the circle introduced herself to me. And it turns out she's the buyer for the YA section! Haha, she has been the one getting all my crazy requests for manga and graphic novels, and she actually remembered them too O_o. Anyway, she has made the dire mistake of inviting me to submit more suggestions, and I am sure you all know what that means. Naturally I am not expecting to go for even half of anything, but hey, you never know! Plus, more people should read Nana. And she spins! And is obviously a Serious Knitterly Person.

(If anyone is wondering about the title of the post, yes, said librarian is the Important Person. I feel whoever is buying books for the YA section of a library very much counts as an Important Person in my book.)

Anyway, it was fun even though I was as nervous as usual about meeting unknown people, and now I have the chance to influence young minds (aka, teach knitting if need be). And the girl sitting across from me had a vol. of xxxHolic checked out, which makes me happy.

I am bored to death. Naturally, this is because I have too many things to do, none of which I actually want to do. Also, I think my brain has been mathed out, since I've been staring blankly at Fibonacci sequence problems for a good hour straight.

So, entertain me by making me entertain you!

I was going to make a poll, but I am so brain dead that I can't even think of good poll items. Tell me what to post about or posts/comments that you'd like to see!

(And for the knitters out there, new Knitty, new Magknits and the spring/summer Vogue Knitting preview are all up, yay! I am dying for the white lace things in VK already. And Elann currently has Rowan Tapestry on sale, which I've coveted for a while but don't know what to do with. Must go home to consult patterns.)

I've been feeling sort of greyish and out-of-sorts lately; not depressed, but just not all there.

So, things that have made me happy recently:

  • Scott Westerfeld posted a picture of his new protagonist today and EEEE! She is Asian! Or at least I think she is...

  • TechKnitting continues to be awesome with a nifty way to cast on a little i-cord loop to start circular projects. I marvel at her brain and am now dying to make a baby hat from top down.

  • The weather, which is warm and sunny and beautiful.

  • Daylight savings starts on Sunday! More daylight, oh thank you!

I am a mad knitter! Unfortunately, I should probably stop soon, as my wrists are starting to hurt. That can't be a good thing...

I am currently working on a striped baby sweater for a knitting circle friend, a leafy green scarf (merino, alpaca, and silk blend, mmmmmm), and a Noro scarf. It's good the Kureyon is so scratchy, or I'd be tempted to keep it myself, the colors are so gorgeous.

Aw crap. It looks like the Wiscon programming participant sign-up is already full.

Oh well, that means I won't get myself in a giant pot of trouble by volunteering to be a panelist on the cultural appropriation panel.

In other news, I feel like I have stolen yarn from my library. I headed over partly to return books and partly to skirt around the edges to see if the knitting/crocheting circle did actually meet up (did not bring projects as was not sure about circle), and they did, and they had yarn, and I stared because there were four lovely balls of Noro Kureyon lying right there! Two different colorways, but still! So I started up a scarf on one, and the lady said I could bring it home, and now I totally feel like I stole it because I am not a regular circle person. And I won't be able to go back for two more weeks because I'll be in Taiwan.

Maybe I will give them the finished scarf, which will somewhat absolve my guilt-ridden conscience.

Will possibly be spamming LJ later in an attempt to catch up on book and TV write-ups.

  • [livejournal.com profile] vom_marlowe is asking who's your favorite mangaka, strictly style-wise?

  • TechKnitting -- Why did no one tell me about this? This blogger would be awesome if only for her 3-in-1 circular join that eliminates the jog and weaves in your ends at the same time. While a lot of technique articles tend to be things I already know (how to gauge, etc.), TechKnitter actually provides new tips and tricks on old techniques. I think my favorite may be the 3-in-1 join and the tips on long-tail cast-on.

Now all I need to do is email her to ask about good ways to do tubular cast-on in circular, non 1x1 rib tubular cast-on, and the possibilities of using Kitcherner stitch to graft together things in patterns (ribbing and anything non-stockinette and non-garter).

  • And I ask everyone what comics or manga you can think of that have stories-within-stories, or stories that comment on each other (aka, the text narrative is telling a different story than the graphic narrative, but they illuminate each other)?
oyceter: Pink ball of yarn with text "yet unmade" (yarn)
I went to knitting circle yesterday, though it was more "knitting line," given that only two of us showed up.

(now I am ashamed of myself for the absolutely horrible math joke that I have inflicted on everyone)

Anyway. I have finally decided to cave in and admit I am certifiably insane when it comes to anything crafty. Instead of proceeding carefully into the void, like most (sane) people, I immediately pick out the most complicated, most insane project I can possibly find. In other words, I have begun knitting the Vogue Knitting HOliday 2006 cropped lace top. In freaking laceweight mohair.

In the cold light of day, it obvious where I have gone wrong: Mohair! Lace! A pattern with six different lace patterns! In mohair!

To exacerbate matters, I actually decided this would be a great project to bring to knitting circle.

Unsurprisingly to anyone (except me), I spent all three hours knitting three rows, and then painfully unknitting four rows, all while attempting to not be rude to my poor other knitting circle compatriot, when really all I wanted to do was a) tear the mohair into six million little pieces, b) burn it, c) salt the ground its ashes resided on, d) all the while swearing like a madwoman, and e) banging my head against a table repeatedly for doing this to myself.

You laugh! But that is because you do not understand the pain that is unknitting mohair! All those nasty little fuzzy fibers twine together into impenetrable forests of fur!

Well, extremely tiny and scaled-down impenetrable forests. But still! Impenetrable!

The coffeeshop closed before I could unknit all four rows, and I ended up on the couch at midnight, half-assedly watching The Collector while glaring at my knitting and unknitting one stitch at a time (4 rows times 87 stitches per row equals 348 stitches and really it is more like 6409 because there are increases and decreases and stitches tangling together into one in a horrible matted mess!).

But I laugh in the face of the evil lavender mohair, even though I know it will only return from the dead to wrap its fuzzy tendrils around me for revenge.

Also, because I continue to be a) stupid, b) insane, or c) both, I look at my lovely four knitted rows that took approximately 5 hours to do and I pet my light-as-a-feather project and I would do it again!

Really, I never learn.

On another note, there was a rat owner at the cafe, and I tried very hard to not eavesdrop, but then I heard "rats" and "pets" and "play with them" and my knitting compatriot said my face lit up like a megawatt bulb (I may be embellishing the bulb part) and I probably babbled for much too long about my wonderful dorky flat rats and eeeeeee! Another rat owner!

Because I am procrastinating and not writing up my 2006 books post, here is picture spam!

I ended up knitting a lot of small things in 2006, which was fun. Four pairs of fingerless gloves! A lot of scarves! I should probably remember to take more knitting pictures; I still don't have pictures of all my projects.

And then, of course, there are the obligatory rat photos. It's easier to take pictures of them, now that they aren't running around and trying to escape every ten seconds.

Haven't been blogging lately (and by "lately," I mean "in the past two days"), largely because I am still mainlining Avatar and knitting like mad. Actually, the latter is inspiring the former, rather than the other way around. I've sort of been watching Avatar out of the corner of my eye while I attempt to work out assorted knitting problems; I wasn't very impressed with the first season at all.

Either the writing has gotten better, or I've gotten more used to the voice actors (non-Japanese voice actors sound SO WEIRD now!), because I'm actually paying attention to the second season. It also helps that more cool female characters have been introduced.

Knitting-wise, I have finished two pairs of fingerless gloves and am nearly done with a third. I think I've memorized the entire pattern now, which is a little scary. I actually knit some Christmas presents, which I swore not to do, largely because the fingerless gloves take about a day to complete (that is... if I knit through ten episodes of Avatar...). And now, I'm starting yet another scarf!

I spent ages and ages looking for a nice, reversible scarf pattern that would look good with self-striping yarn, which ruled out pretty much all cables. And I didn't want ot do seed stitch, because it bores me. After driving myself insane, I ended up going to the local yarn store to look for a stitch dictionary, only to find they were sold out on everything that wasn't Vogue Knitting's stitch dictionaries of cables or colorwork, neither of which I wanted. Borders also only had two, neither that I wanted for my personal library. So I am now just sucking it up and doing mistake rib, which will mean I will have enough brainpower to actually pay attention to whatever I'm watching at the moment.

And... the rats continue to be cute, albeit naughty! For a period, since they can easily jump off the couch, I was sticking them in the bathtub when I cleaned their cage.

Unfortunately, but really not that unsurprisingly, Ruki has already discovered that he can jump out of the bathtub, despite it being about ten times as tall as him. I stand there and glare at him, while he happily chitters to himself and tries time after time after time, no matter how often I dump him back into the tub.

I think he thinks it's a game.
