While shelving the business section today, I came across the 1996 version of Dress for Success for Women. Being curious, I flipped it open, and it fell right to a page in which the author advises all women to wear skirts to work unless absolutely necessary. He says this because much research shows that men have problems taking orders or listening to women in pants.

1996!!

WTF?!

Grrrrrr. I am of half a mind to take that book and bury it somewhere in the store where no one will ever see it.

I dunno, my husband takes orders just fine, and I almost never wear skirts.

Besides, who wears skirts to work? And I'm kind of insulted by the fact that women have to be the accomodating ones because oh, the poor men, they're just not used to having women in the workplace. Total bull!

That's so totally one person's opinion. I was alive and well and in the work place even earlier than 1996, and whether it's slacks or dresses is totally dependent on the atmosphere where you work. Often, dresses are seen as more 'professional' and are more apt to be required the more you get into the upper eschelons of business. But it's a matter of the perception of professionalism (women in pants are seen as 'dressing down', or more casual).

And when professionalism is what's key, not any dress will do. It's tailored suits, the right colors, and a whole slew of things. And that goes for men as well--the right suits, the right colors, and not looking too casual.

Sorry about that previous post. Thought I was talking to Oyce. But there are more than one guy in the Bay Area who wear skirts while they go about their daily business.

It's funny, because I remember talking to some people about interviews and proper procedure and etc. And I wondered, should I wear a skirt suit? The answer I got was: "Nah! No one wears those now!" Hee.

Ohhh! The power you have! You could have so much fun. You could open peoples mind with the power of product placement. I have often wondered if book store people do this. Sometimes I have found that the selections that they are highlighting by the workers makes these sorts of statements.

I do that so much!! I got really annoyed with all the stupid-sounding business books that I would only put my linguistics books on display. And once I put up a copy of The Witch Doctors -- never read it, but the back had a blurb on how it talked about the silly self-help business books that were being published.

Stuff like that -- a writing book by Jane Yolen goes on display, etc. Hee.

You know, I keep hearing advice like that, especially about court work. "Never appear in front of a male judge in a pants suit" is something drilled in to us in uni. Yet I've done so on multiple occasions and never suffered any consequences. I'm yet to be convicned that most men even notice ...

I was surprised too because I've always had an impression that pants suits just looked more professional. I guess I can blame that on Ally McBeal ;).

It's an evil book. On the other hand, it's obsolete. (Is he still telling women to wear hats?)

I hope not! But there was a section on scarves -- the silk scarves, not cold weather scarves.

Hrm, now I am wondering if my idea of business dress is completely wrong!
