Lots of pictures of food (unsurprising), one of bad parking, and a few of the Hello Kitty gate at the airport!

Sigh. I want to go back to Taiwan now.

There's another typhoon blowing in, and I'm hoping it won't delay my flight on Tuesday.

I already posted my ode to Hong Kong previously, and now I have pictures! Though I make fun of all the metaphorically thrusting buildings in the notes, I love the Hong Kong skyline, I really do.

Even more random things:

  1. I forgot how noisy summers here are; the cicadas hum day and night, the buzz so constant that it becomes background noise after a few minutes. I remember how much I laughed when New Jersey was making a big deal over cicada season there, which apparently only happens once every seventeen years. They can have the cicadas! Well, I don't mind the noise, but occasionally one dies and falls out of a tree, and let me tell you, those are some ginormous, UGLY bugs!

  2. After fifteen years or so of being fed very good wine by my dad the wine freak oenophile, I have discovered that I seem to like Bordeaux. This makes me feel somewhat better, as the first wine I figured out I liked was German Rieslings, which are sweet and taste like grape juice and are apparently highly unsophisticated. Now I can say I also like fancy expensive wine as well! (On the other hand, I still cannot tell you anything about chocolate overtones or berry smells or notes of oak or whatnot.)

  3. I may, amazingly, be burning out on tdramas! At least, aside from Mars, which I am now obsessed with as in I flip through the manga once I watch a few eps and then read ahead a little then try to convince myself that going to bed at four in the morning to watch another episode is not worth it. On the other hand, most of the other tdramas I have tried sort of suck. Or, they don't suck completely, but they're also not excellent. For the record, I don't think it's anything intrinsic in the Taiwan-ness; much like the manhua here, I think it's because the industry is still very young and therefore doesn't have as much mature work. Plus, Sturgeon's Law applies even more when the quantity availble is small, IMO.

  4. It is still REALLY hot and muggy.

And now, giant pictures of my favorite spread from Ooku, food, knitting, food, some scenery, food, TAKESHI KANESHIRO, food, TONY LEUNG, and more food.

Random things about Taiwan:

  1. I am grateful beyond expression that most bathrooms in Taiwan now come with toilet paper. Some even come with toilet seat covers! Still more amazing is the fact that people now seem to be sitting on the toilet seats as opposed to squatting on them and leaving the dirty marks of their shoes on the toilet seats.

  2. Continuing the theme of toilets, I went to a restaurant that has toilets that are smarter than me. They are the fancy Japanese toilets that are multifunctional, and though I have seen those before, these were different! As in, when you walked into the stall, the toilet lid would automatically open up for you.

  3. And one more: Din Tai Fung, my favorite Shanghai dumpling place and tourist trap extraordinaire (it's popular because it's GOOD!), is apparently appealing to its Japanese tourists by having the fancy Japanese toilet seats (albeit without automatic toilet lid opening) and the little thing that makes flushing noises when you press it so people won't hear you.

  4. Every time I think it cannot possibly get hotter or muggier, it does.

In other news, after discovering Nan Kongyuu, my manhua-reading hasn't been going very well. I read a one shot by Wang Yi Something, which seemed to be a nice, quiet shoujo piece on a grumpy, solitary painter and a politician, and I was enjoying the grumpiness of the heroine, which seemed genuine. Then I stopped reading when the evil fiancee started acting evil (boo random misogyny!) and flipped to the end to see if anything had happened.

Turns out, the painter boards a plane to her painting school, and the two stare longingly into space, presumably at each other. Then, the plane explodes! She dies thinking how wonderful it was to have known him, and he muses on her as the love of his life.

The end.

On a less randomly depressing and WTF-ish note, I have a huge batch of picture spam this time! Amazingly, not all of them are of food, as we went to visit a museum on Sunday.

I am very proud of myself! Lately I have been consuming all-Chinese media in terms of TV and reading, with the exception of the internet! One hopes that my Chinese is improving marginally, or at least that I am recovering some long-forgotten vocabulary. And better yet, I got a membership card at a local book rental store—book rental stores here largely stock manga, romance novels and wuxia novels—so I can sample a lot more manhua without having to buy everything.

It was about $2 to borrow 7 books for five days; not up to par with a public library, clearly, but still not bad, especially as I don't know how the state of Taiwan's public libraries are. I also suspect that they don't shelve as much manga as the rental stores. I am hoping that the manga rental store will have out-of-print titles as well, though I'm still looking for a copy of Yazawa Ai's Last Quarter so I can reread it and take it home.

A friend of my mom also lent me some kdramas, one of which is the Gong Yoo teacher drama. Aiiiieeeee! Maybe I will watch one episode to give it a fair chance and then quickly return it. The others are Miss Mermaid and Queen of the Game, neither of which I have heard of. I query my FL for help! Also also, I keep seeing box sets of Dal Ja's Spring and Coffee Prince here for about $40, and I want them SO MUCH! I have only been refraining because they only have Chinese subtitles, and that will put a damper on my plan to sic them on as many people as possible.

So far, I have very little to do here save eat and watch TV. I've also been going to calligraphy lessons and cooking lessons with my mom, both of which are very fun, although my calligraphy is still pretty ugly. For cooking, we learned how to make Dong Po pork, salty eggs with pumpkin, pipa tofu, some stewed meat, winter melon tomato soup, and bao.

As you all can probably tell, I've also been mainlining dramas like mad. I just found out that Blockbuster charges by every two episodes as opposed to per disc, grrrr. Still, cheaper than buying and faster than downloading. Also, it makes me practice my Chinese (subtitles for the kdramas, spoken for the cdramas). I've decided not to keep watching the Taiwan Hana Kimi, as it seems to be the same thing over and over, and I am much less invested in Sano's high jumping than in restauranteering. I also caught an episode of the Taiwan Honey and Clover, and I think I will also not watch that, as the actress who plays Hagu has an incredibly annoying fake baby voice, and as they seem to be putting in more romance twists. The humor works better in animation as well.

And now, giant pictures of food! And some scenery. But mostly food.

  1. I have almost convinced my dad that he wants to give me tiny laptop, since it's not like he uses it anyway. Sadly, tiny laptop's trackpad right click button is broken, which is not good. It works with a mouse, but that will cut down slightly on portability. On the other hand, getting fairly good at typing on it now...

  2. Got Lasik on Monday. Currently eyes are a little dry and feel like I have contacts on, but I am still not over the fact that I can open my eyes and see things clearly! (I can't wear contacts.) My face feels so naked!

  3. The Blockbuster here has DRAMAS! BWAHAHAHAHA! So far, have watched eps. 1 and 2 of Legend, eps. 1 and 2 of the Taiwan version of Hana Kimi, and ep. 1 of Smiling Pasta. Sadly, Smiling Pasta is the one my mom bought and so far the least good of the bunch. I keep wanting to whack the heroine for playing dumb and cute. On the other hand, the secondary lead heroine seems interesting and wounded. Any recs for tdramas greatly appreciated! I think my mom is very happy that I am watching stuff in Chinese.

  4. Watched Warlords, the latest movie with Jet Li, Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro. Unfortunately, was jetlagged and nearly fell asleep. Also, as everyone changes hairstyles and clothing every three scenes, I kept mixing up Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro's characters, despite knowing full well what they look like. I blame the scruffy facial hair. I think I will buy it anyway, as the rented DVD had English subtitles, so I can sic it on [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija when she visits, as who knows when it will come out in the US!

Back home!

Safely back home!

... wow. I forgot how humid it was here. It's not that hot (yet), but everything is oh so sticky and clammy to the touch. Also, I think I've only been out of the plane for an hour or two, and I may already have my first mosquito bite.

On the other hand, my dad has an Asus EEE PC! The world taunts me with tiny laptops! Maybe I will look at the older models here and see if they're cheaper, since Asus is a Taiwan company. Before leaving, I didn't do anything save logistical stuff (packing, cleaning out fridge, etc.) and mainline Avatar and some Princess Tutu. Then I watched eps. 1-13 of Avatar S3 on the plane! I love my iPod so much. Its battery held up through all of that, and possibly could have gone for a few more episodes as well. Spoilers through 3x15 )
