Knitting + Taiwan trip pictures

The finished peacock shawl, pre-blocking, so it's still all lumpy.
The finished, blocked peacock shawl in all its glory! I love how blocking makes my wrinkly pieces of knitting look like works of art.
Close-up of the tail of the shawl.
Pinning down all the loops was a bit of a pain, but so worth it.
Not actually from the Taiwan trip, but from Wiscon -- henna wings, bwahaha! Yes, I am twelve.
The high-speed railroad was just finished around last year, and I got to ride it for the first time! This is the Hsinchu station.
Another look at the train station.
The inside of the train. It's remarkably nice and clean and the entire thing is so well-organized. You can go from the north end of Taiwan to the south end in about two and a half hours instead of 5 or 6! Oh, if only we had the same thing running from SF Bay Area to LA...
The Starbucks here really have much better food, IMHO. Plus, waffles!
A scallion pancake that sadly ended up looking better than it tasted (too heavy and oily).
Lunch at a Taiwanese small eats place. I think there's yam leaves, marinated eggplant with the sticky white root vegetable called shan yao, marinated okra, and pork slices.
Taiwanese fish! So tasty.
Aaaand... I finally got to have Ice Monster mango ice for the first time in four years or so! OMG SO GOOD.
My first attempts at calligraphy. The red is all the teacher's. It is so hard! And mine still don't look as good as the ones in the book, sigh.
Chicken, cucumber and peanut sauce cold noodles from Family Mart. I am a great sucker for convenience store food.
And a salmon onigiri and coffee, again from Family Mart! I am so amused at the Starbucks coffee. They had ones labeled "Paris," "Seattle," and "Milano."
Fun and interesting chip flavors! If you can't see, the first is garlicky prawn, and the second is ham and cheese.
So we went to an Italian place with a bunch of my parents' friends, and sat there for FOUR HOURS. I was bored to death. And it was hot. But as we went out, one of the tables downstairs had... a hedgehog! He was so cute! I pet him and scratched his chin and let him lick me.
More hedgehog! I cannot get over how cute he is. He's about the size of my hand or my rats, sans tails.
Mango and tapioca dessert, yum.
I am so amused that one of the department stores in Taipei has a Dean & Deluca in it. And that the ad for it in the elevator has stuff for the Fourth of July.
I was shopping at Kinokuniya when I noticed giant crowds of people gathering. Turns out that the actors for the new Honey and Clover drama were going to be there, so I hung out there for a few minutes in hopes of catching sight of them. This is pre-appearance, so all you can see is a bit of the poster and a lot of crowd.
The actors! I had a lousy position because I hadn't bought a ticket or anything, but the guy in the middle with the white shirt is one of them. And I think you can see the nape of the neck of the actress who plays Yamada.
More backs of the heads of the actors, ha.
Aaaand, LOOT! Bwahahaha! I have Ooku and vols. 8 and 9 of After School Nightmare in Chinese because I could not wait. Also, I am jealous of how cheap manga here is -- these five vols. cost me about $20 total.

Mon, Jun. 9th, 2008 04:00 am (UTC)I am also jealous that you can read and write Chinese. okay mostly because of the manga. If I'd been there I would have attempted some calligraphy too, and you could have laughed.
What are the round brown things on the steamed fish? Beans?
I am so jealous. I wish I was there with you right now. Please tell me it is very hot and sticky.
Oh, and your shawl is beautiful.

Mon, Jun. 9th, 2008 06:37 am (UTC)The round brown things on the fish are these sour stone fruit things -- I asked an ahyi and she said they were sort of like how you put capers on smoked salmon.

Mon, Jun. 9th, 2008 05:42 pm (UTC)I would love to try Taiwanese food. Is is more hearty and earthy, or am I thinking of something else?

Tue, Jun. 10th, 2008 03:38 pm (UTC)I think Taiwanese food is more hearty, though it's hard to say. Maybe the ingredients tend to be a little different? I think it uses things we normally don't think of eating, like flower shoots of betel nut trees or something. Or I'm confusing that with something else.....

Mon, Jun. 9th, 2008 05:38 am (UTC)Also, awwww, hedgie. I miss our little guy Tiggy, even if we did have to feed him disgusting mealworms, and when he had cancer for like the last six months of his life (but he was still so happy!) and couldn't move, we had to feed them all wriggling with a pair of tweezers and it took forever for him to glom onto them and chew them, ugh. ::shudder::

Mon, Jun. 9th, 2008 06:40 am (UTC)OMG the hedgehog is so cute, but I might stick with cuddlier rats for now...

Mon, Jun. 9th, 2008 08:40 am (UTC)Great calligraphy, by the way. My Chinese writing is okay with pen or pencil, but horrible with a brush. Yours is inspirational.

Tue, Jun. 10th, 2008 03:37 pm (UTC)Re: the calligraphy. Hahaha... the only reason it looks presentable is because I had a book right next to me and was copying stuff out of it, complete with the red grids. You should have seen my first attempts sans book. Sadly, my Chinese handwriting (and English, for that matter) is pretty wretched as well.

Mon, Jun. 9th, 2008 07:18 am (UTC)Also total food envy.
Also? Total Ooku envy. At least Afterschool Nightmare is English-licensed, but that? I have just envy. Let us know how it is?

Fri, Jun. 13th, 2008 03:18 am (UTC)I think it's shaved ice topped with a sugar syrup, condensed milk, a scoop of mango sorbet, and lots of diced mango, so it shouldn't be too hard to replicate, save for the shaved ice part. Also, mmmm family farm mango sorbet!
