New York

After having briefly been caught up on online things for about a day or so, I am now behind again.

I have eaten much tasty food, although sadly, I never made it to the Doughnut Plant or S'mac for mac and cheese. ([personal profile] coffeeandink does not like mac and cheese. I told my sister this, who replied, "You have strange friends.") But! I had Actual NY Bagels at Ess-a-Bagel, and now I understand why people make fun of non-NY bagels. Bagels are chewy! With a good, hearty crust! But most of all, chewy! They made my jaws hurt and I couldn't finish an entire bagel, but they are very good. Alas, Ess-a-Bagel's egg salad did not quite meet my standards (I like more celery and more salt), but oh well. I also had pizza at Motorino's, which was good but frankly, I think pizza in some California restaurants is good too.

Other places eaten at include Gobo (good mushroom fritters), Westville (market vegetables including PEAS and TOMATOES YAY!), Joe's Ginger (good beef roll things/牛肉夾餅), Nolita House (three kinds of mac and cheese!), Mely's home cooking (I am impressed!), and I finally made it to Shake Shack, which has pretty good burgers for the price, although I still do not understand what frozen custard is and how it differs from soft serve.

Met up with a lot of awesome people (*waves hi*), though still not as many as I wanted to see. And I managed to only buy 6 books!

Also, Terminal 5 of JFK has awesome recharging stations with touch screens that let you swipe your credit card, order food, and have it delivered right to you. The future, it is here!

Finally, NY!

Finally, I am in New York and fully conscious! My perpetual insomnia reared its ugly head again, meaning I didn't sleep during the red eye, but worse still was that some autopilot equipment broke and the fog in New York was so bad that they couldn't land without it. So we circled... and circled... and circled... and then ran out of gas. So we flew to Connecticut and landed there. And stayed there for two hours until the fog dissipated, then flew BACK to New York.

Then I decided given my complete lack of sleep and annoyed-ness about the flight delay meant I would splurge on a taxi instead of taking the subway. Unfortunately, I ended up with the most incompetent taxi driver ever, who did not know where [personal profile] coffeeandink's address was. This would not be the bad part, sadly. Since he could not figure it out, he made me call her, but when I handed over the phone, he did not know any of the landmarks she mentioned. I finally told him to forget it and drive me to the subway station nearest to the airport. He then got lost doing so and pulled over not once, but twice, to ask completely random bystanders how to get to the subway station. Then when I finally got off, it turned out it wasn't even the right station, but at least it was on the same line.

I do not expect taxi drivers to know every street in their city, but if they don't know where something is, I generally would think they would have a better strategy than to drive around in circles, make the customer call her friend, then ask random bystanders. Even I usually have a better strategy than that.

But! At least now I am with Mely and [personal profile] deepad!
