First opera I ever saw. Er. Well, I watched the Zeffirelli film on VHS way back when and decided that maybe opera was actually interesting instead of being old and fussy like I had previously thought. Silly me.

Anyhow, I got it again from Netflix, and I still like it. This time, the singing doesn't bore me like it did before; instead, for some reason, all the melodies and arias and the like are strangely familiar. Well, I knew the beginning toast song would be because after I watched it the first time, I had been humming it for weeks. But I was surprised to realize that I remembered the arias as well.

Also, it's very Victorian. Hee.

And why in the world didn't I realize before that Moulin Rouge must have been based on this? Well, on this or on Camille, except I only found out a few minutes ago that the opera was based on the book. I feel rather dumb now. I guess I just haven't thought about La Traviata for quite some time. Besides, stories about beautiful courtesans falling in love aren't all that uncommon, nor are stories in which the lovely heroine dies of consumption. But -- well, I don't know how it is in the libretto, given that I've only seen one version of the opera -- the scene where Alfredo throws money at Violetta to pay her back, after he's heartbroken because she told him she loves the Baron to save his life and to protect his family? Baz Luhrmann totally took that!

Now I have to go read Camille, just to make my repertoire of beautiful-courtesans-who-fall-in-love-and-pretend-they-don't-love-their-lovers-then-die-of-consumption narrative complete ;).

So I had a very nice Valentine's Day (the first one like that, really), went to NY, ate steak, saw an opera. Then come home to find that apparently my computer has been making weird sounds so my roommate turned it off. I make the boy look at it, and it starts making this horrible scratchy noise and goes to some strange screen where it can't find my boot section or something!! Apparently there is something wrong in my hard drive. And for once I did not do this. Nooooo... it was a bloody mechanical error in a laptop I've only had for 5 MONTHS! I hate this! I knew this computer hated me! It hasn't been working properly from the start and it's brand fucking new. The hell?! !@#@#$!#$@!@##$ And of course OIT is closed today and tomorrow so I can't simply barge in there and MAKE THEM FIX MY LAPTOP DAMNIT!

I'm not good about losing computer access.

And all my Buffy and Angel episodes are in there! All I'm saying is it's a good thing I haven't started writing my thesis yet. Because if I had lost part of that... insanely angry wouldn't even begin to describe it.

And now on to happier, less aggravating subjects.

Saw La Boheme in NYC )

Angel 4x12 Calvary ) I love my two shows right now! Angel is becoming the beautifully dark, scary, noirish drama it used to be, and Buffy is going back to that wonderful blend of comedy, drama, and horror that it used to be. I can never decide which one I like better, because, me being me, I adore the darkness of Angel, but I love the characters on Buffy. Not so much on Angel right now. And now I will do a useless run down on each character, just because.

Angel:
Angel - varies greatly. I was extremely bored with him on Buffy, liked dorky him. Generally he bores me. Unless of course, he's Angelus.
Cordy - loved her to death before the entire final half of season 3. Adoring Cordevilia.
Wes - adore. Totally. Sissy!Wes and early-Angel!Wes and now Grey!Wes, love 'em all.
Gunn - no real opinion... dislike him when he's being possessive about Fred, but in general, don't really care.
Connor - no real opinion, although sometimes I find his rebellious teen thing a little annoying
Lilah - thought she was boring at first, but now love.
Fred - never really liked Fred.

Buffy:
Buffy - I do like her, even though sometimes I find her a little self-centered
Willow - adore Willow, from geekiness to Darth Rosenberg.
Xander - disliked him in season 6, but after watching earlier eps and these ones, I like him. A good deal.
Giles - really love Giles. Passion was one of the most painful eps of Buffy because of him.
Dawn - I liked her in season 5, and still am fond of her.
Spike - need you ask? Spike is the reason I started watching Buffy
Anya - found her a little annoying at first, but really like her now.

Okay.. done rambling now, and I have accomplished my goal. I will not think about the laptop. I will not. !#&$&@%
