(this is the only school-appropriate icon I can think of...)

Ok, um, so, I just got my fourth problem set yesterday, and I have already finished half of it because I thought it was fun.

They're like crossword puzzles, I swear! Only... in first-order logic! With nifty self-validating software that gives me the immediate satisfaction of knowing if I am right or wrong!

Possibly I will change my tune tomorrow, when we start learning about quantifiers, which sort of confused me in the textbook.

But they use upside-down letters! Really, how bad can they be...?

So despite completely freaking out over my class before it started, I have now discovered that I am eagerly anticipating being able to watch the lectures when I get home. And... yes possibly i was excited about the new problem set.

This is not a class on Japanese history! No! It is a class on discrete mathematics!

Could someone find whatever aliens have taken my brain and thank them?

I suppose this isn't that much of a surprise; I loved to do logic puzzles and games when I was a kid, and right now, the problem sets for formal logic proofs feel a lot like that.

Still. I was up till 4 in the morning last night because I couldn't stop thinking about one problem I wasn't getting right, and when I solved it, I had to get out of bed and stick it in the computer, just in case I forgot come the morning. I have finished my problem set TWO WHOLE DAYS before it is due! And I actually get stuff! And it is sort of cool and exciting and nicely formal, and it is so lovely going step by step and just watching all these proofs fall into place, like teeth on gears clicking together.

I had forgotten that a long time ago, I used to like math for its precision and accuracy, for things like Euler's proof that irrational numbers exist.
