And somewhere down the line, the art stopped being horribly crowded and hard to read and became really gorgeous.

This series always makes me a little wary, even though I love it, largely because of the abundance of male characters and male angst. I very much love the series' acknowledgment of the female id in the entire host club set up, but I just wish there were more women.

In conclusion: more Haruhi! (And I wouldn't mind more Kyoya or Mori either.)

I had read volumes 1-3 about a year or so ago and decided not to continue because the paneling was too busy and the manga lost a lot of humor without the sound effect of the anime.

But then, I saw volumes 2-10 at the library and decided to read them just for the heck of it. It also helped that [livejournal.com profile] rilina had been telling me that the manga got much better, especially once it got past the territory covered by the anime. So far, it covers most of the anime, with a few unanimated chapters in volumes 8-10.

Thankfully, either I got used to Hatori's paneling, or she got better at it; it no longer confuses the heck out of me, and I'm fairly certain that her layouts have gotten less busy. Some bits are still funnier in the anime—Tamaki's "Mon ami!" in particular—but Hatori's art is pleasant. I also love that she includes sketches of her characters by other mangaka in the extra bits, particularly the one Matsuri Hino did.

Storywise, there's not much difference so far. I am having an easier time telling the twins apart in terms of personality, though I vaguely remember being able to do that in the latter half of the anime as well. I do like that the non-animated bits have more women in them, although usually it's a girl and how the host club heals her or whatnot in some way. On the other hand, volume 10 introduces a non-Haruhi female character who could stick around for a while.

I'm rather disturbed by the translation's use of "tranny;" does anyone know if it corresponds to a similarly derogatory Japanese term, or if it's supposed to just be informal?

Still, fun manga, especially now that it's going beyond the territory of the anime. Also, I root for more character development for Kyoya and Mori, my favorite host club guys.

So I've been mainlining the anime of Ouran High School Host Club like mad, and I love it!

I read vol. 1 of the manga a few months ago, when the anime first came out and everyone was squeeing about it. I didn't really like it, so I never read the others until today. I think I was very boggled by the humor of the manga; sometimes humor works better for me in print form, and sometimes better animated. I'm not quite sure how my brain parses it, but Ouran definitely worked better for me as anime. Part of it is pacing -- I don't pace myself well in manga, so I often miss punchlines and dramatic moments if it's not emphasized by the panelling. Also, the panels themselves are so incredibly busy that I end up skimming the entire thing out of sensory overload.

The anime, on the other hand, has funny blinking arrows and sound effects and still frames, all of which serve to pace the entire thing better, leave times for breathing, cue me in on when I should be concentrating.

Also, I suspect that I'd find the episodic nature of the manga much more accessible if I'd been reading it in monthly installments intead of as volumes.

That said, the manga and the anime are amazingly similar; there have been a few divergences in plot and story, but I suspect that some of the things in the manga will end up in the anime anyhow. I was a little sad to see that Renge's role in the manga isn't quite as large, and I miss having the music and etc. tell me when something's supposed to be serious and what something's a joke.

Not sure if I'll keep reading the manga right now, though I suspect I will pick it up once I finish the anime, just to get more of it.
