Buffy 7x18 Dirty Girls
Mon, Apr. 14th, 2003 08:33 pmI'm finally reading the first three Vampire Diaries books (in the middle of the second one right now) and goodness, the Salvatore brothers are awesome! I didn't think I'd like Stefan very much based on the fourth book because he seemed all like Angel and mopey. Which is fine, and I'm not character bashing, because I do like Angel. I just tend to be attracted to bad attitudes more. But Stefan, definitely cool.
The Google lady called back after receiving the written questionnaire thing, and she says it'd be great if I could fly to California sometime to meet the team. Now I'm confused, because I told her I wasn't going to be available job-wise until around July, what with graduation and family stuff and all that, but I should have enough time in May to fly down there and "meet the team." But I don't even know if this is like a second round interview or a they're probably going to hire me if I'm not a complete psycho type thing. I hope hope hope hope it's the second, because I suck so much at interviews. And then I'd have a job, and I could tell my mom, and I could stop worrying, and life would be lovely.
I can't make myself reread my thesis, mostly because I hate going over my own work. So many glaring errors and stupid mistakes, ugh. But I must do this. I woke up today and realized with a sinking sense of horror that the thing was due exactly two weeks from now! And I still have to edit all of it and write a conclusion! Ugh.
Buffy 7x18 Dirty Girls
My first reaction at the end of the episode: !!!!!
And I had even read all the spoilers too!
Anyway, lots of interesting play on the idea of who was a dirty girl and what made girls dirty. I thought it was really interesting in contrast with Faith, the bad girl, returning, Spike telling Faith that Buffy has been doing some "dirty" sex things, and the idea of misogyny coupled with Xander's pillow fight fantasy.
And I actually didn't mind Xander's fantasy -- it seemed kind of like a send off to the character. Now I think that Xander is going to die instead of Anya, given the makeup sex and all.
Caleb is very frightening, almost like the Mayor in the blend of down-home folksiness and sheer creepiness. Although he's scarier in some sense because he isn't so gleeful -- he's just incredibly sure that he is righteous and right.
And Faith is back again! This makes me very happy, especially since I just watched Bad Girls (oooo parallel!!) for the first time yesterday. I love how her attitude has completely changed from when she was on Angel and knew that she was partially accepted by some people and trusted by Wesley and Angel. Now she's defensive and full of bravado. And I absolutely adored her conversations with Spike, especially in the beginning, when he's trying to convince her he's not evil. It's like the ex-killers on the path to redemption club.
I felt Buffy's being fired was handled realistically, in that Wood isn't firing her because he's mad or anything, but because he's thinking that she needs the time and energy. And that there aren't very many students left to counsel anymore anyway.
I liked Xander's speech and the Buffy/Faith banter right after it. I also loved Faith getting the stake from Buffy's thigh in the beginning.
I hurt because of the Giles/Buffy rift, especially since I just watched Helpless too. I love my season 3 DVDs. But it ended well in Helpless, with the admittance of Giles' father-love, and it just hurts to see how he's not being supportive and being overtly critical of Buffy and how Buffy is completely shutting him out. I think, though, it hurts the most because both Buffy and Giles don't seem to feel as though it hurts. Buffy isn't torn up like she was in Helpless, and neither is Giles -- instead, both of them are entirely convinced that they've done the right thing.
The final battle -- Caleb is really scary. I thought I didn't care about the potentials, but watching the random girls dying and being scared was painful. I also realized that it's very rare in Buffy to watch humans being killed like that in such great numbers, and I kept wanting Buffy to go in, kick some ass, and save them, like she does. And I'm not even going to start thinking about that last scene with Xander, because oh god that hurt.

Mon, Apr. 14th, 2003 07:26 pm (UTC)This would have been exactly my reaction, had I, you know, been able to form words. I was unspoiled as always, so the Xander thing almost gave me a heart attack. Omigod, Xander. How could they?
Now his sweet speech today, and the one in Potential, make me extra sad. Aw. Xander. My Xander love was overshadowed by my Spike love last season, cuz Xander was being all mean to my Spikey, but he's been good this season... and this is what they do to him!
But -- is it permanent? (Don't answer that if you happen to know). It sure looked permanent to me, but I thought Cordelia was dead in "Lover's Walk," and they fool me with the Giles death-scare every frickin season, so I don't trust myself. Even though that was lot of blood... oh! stopping now. Visuals bad. Er... no pun intended. Ow.
On a happier note... I loved the Spike/Faith/Buffy part of the teaser. "Stop!" punch "Hitting!" kick "Me!" punch. And "He's with me." Sing it, Buffy! Now let's see it.
And how jealous was she finding them in the basement all cozy? Heh. I hope she heard Spike repeat what Faith said to him in Who Are You. Shirtless Spike flirting with Faith was awesome. And how pretty was Faith looking in that scene? I {heart} Faith.
The ending freaked me out, although Caleb pissed me off more than creeped me out -- not in a "this character is so annoying" way, in a "damn, I hate people like that" way. How'd he get so strong?
Kill him good, Buffy. Where's the troll hammer? (Speaking of the troll hammer, where the hell was Anya?)
Overall... holy shit. I dunno whether that's a good or bad or squee or squick "holy shit," so I'm just gonna go with all of them at once.

Mon, Apr. 14th, 2003 08:16 pm (UTC)I know! As I said, I read the spoilers, and it still hurt like mad!
I think it's especially funny how the spoiled Spuffy community was getting up in arms when the spoilers of the Spike/Faith exchanges first leaked out (lots of moaning about the breaking up of Spuffy, etc.) while I think they play it mostly as friend-bonding and making Buffy jealous! Nyaha. I swear, I'm as bad as my B/A roommate. Hee.
Caleb mostly creeped me out because he was so CALM about it, the way he burned the girl and stabbed her. And the way he did what he did to Xander (did the last scene in the hospital break your heart too?)
I love Faith very much, and it's awesome that I'm watching season 3 in concurrence with this.
Guh. Can't form real opinion until I've watched it again tomorrow!

Mon, Apr. 14th, 2003 08:44 pm (UTC)HAHAHAHA!! But seriously, Buffy stomped on that last stair, and when Spike sees the expression on her face and gets all sheepish... HA! And Faith looks at him and you can see her going, "yep, he's Buffy's bitch." Though I'm sure she already suspected that, as he "seemed to be okay" with her coming onto him in the Buffster's body.
What? No, I didn't watch that seem 12 times! maybe 11.
did the last scene in the hospital break your heart too?
::sniffle:: YES. I'm stull stunned by Xander taking a hit like that for his "have faith in Buffy" (heh -- pun intended) speech, and Willow sitting there holding his hand and that voice over about the story and a happy ending... ::shiver::

Mon, Apr. 14th, 2003 11:20 pm (UTC)Hee! And the boy thinks I'm weird for downloading it on Monday and watching it on the big TV on Tuesday! That'll show him! Oh god I love the moment when Buffy "catches" them and Spike acts all whipped, when before, he and Faith are kind of comparing war wounds ("Yeah? Well I got redeemed earlier than you!")
And I'm so worried that they're going to kill off Xander now! What with the mass destruction of the potentials and guh! After he's been so sweet and just... Xander.

Mon, Apr. 14th, 2003 07:36 pm (UTC)I hope you get the Google job, and I'm sure you'll be fine at the interview (if it *is* an interview). Just remember to look them in the eye, smile, take time to think before answering questions, and don't be afraid to bullsh*t your way through ;) Good luck!
