And somewhere down the line, the art stopped being horribly crowded and hard to read and became really gorgeous.
This series always makes me a little wary, even though I love it, largely because of the abundance of male characters and male angst. I very much love the series' acknowledgment of the female id in the entire host club set up, but I just wish there were more women.
Spoilers grow into themselves
It's totally silly, but I kind of love the Ouran version of the standard shoujo sports festival. Toro hidden in the bread eating contest! Kyoya's horribly detailed strategy! Tamaki turning to Shakespeare! Awesome.
And then, hello twins! And now, I can actually tell you apart (both thanks to Hikaru's new hair and Hatori passing on someone else's explanation for the hair part)! I did roll my eyes a little at Kaoru's way of telling Hikaru that Hikaru was still the most important, but not as much as I normally would, as it's acknowledged in the story as Kaoru's mistake. I love that Hikaru is the one to come to the realization that even though they need to be their own people, doing so doesn't mean they have to reject each other.
Unsurprisingly, I am least touched by Tamaki's angst, even as Hatori successfully manages to tug my heartstrings. It's not that I dislike him; that would be like kicking a puppy. It's only that I am still wary of Hatori setting him up with Haruhi, and what I mentioned above about the prevalence of male angst. Still, I love that his mother is exactly like him, and I've most been enjoying the further development of his friendship with Kyoya.
With regards to shipping, I just don't want to in general, and I almost wish the manga would simply go with Haruhi and her wacky adventures with the guys. Still, I think Hatori is good enough to pull off whatever she intends to, even as I want more platonic relationships.
In conclusion: more Haruhi! (And I wouldn't mind more Kyoya or Mori either.)

Wed, Jul. 29th, 2009 02:21 pm (UTC)I love Haruhi - and her Dad!
Tamaki's actual issues are moderately lightweight for serious angst (especially in comparison with, say, the Saiyuki boys), but the whole series is lightweight in a lot of ways, and it embraces the fact. I think Hatori is a really awesome storyteller, and I'm really glad that this was recommended as one of my first shoujo series.
