Tamaki's actual issues are moderately lightweight for serious angst (especially in comparison with, say, the Saiyuki boys), but the whole series is lightweight in a lot of ways, and it embraces the fact. I think Hatori is a really awesome storyteller, and I'm really glad that this was recommended as one of my first shoujo series.
