I play with a laptop and trackpad also. Assuming your laptop has buttons below the trackpad, this might help:
The trick I've found with the foxes is to find a preserve where there are several glitches already with a lot of bait strewn around. Position your glitch in a bush but near enough to an open patch of ground so that you can see the fox run across. Put your brush in an inventory slot that is directly below the open patch. Click and hold on the brush - as long as you don't drag it out of your inventory too early, it won't get impatient and "fail". When the fox appears, drag the brush up and release.
Alternatively, hire me (Peech) as a semi-pro fox brusher*, and I will deliver fibre in trade for... something else. XD
*Also available as on-demand semi-pro mourner, for when you die in those awkward locations.
