1x14 Dreamy
This was terrible, especially after my great enjoyment of the previous episode. I continue to be unimpressed by Amy Acker in the role of Cute Girl ala Fred in Angel. The actor playing Dreamy/Grumpy/Leroy is good, and I'm glad someone not Hollywood-pretty gets a romantic storyline, though annoyed at the storyline itself and the gendering.
Also: dwarfs are hatched from eggs?! ("Dwarves!" "Dwarfs. "Dwarfs are very upsetting.") And really hated Belle giving Dreamy the sell on love.
1x15 Red-Handed
Despite being spoiled for the Red-as-wolf plot twist, I was still surprised. I didn't think the show would actually go to a place where Red was sympathetic but also the perpetrator of all the carnage we see earlier. I think I had been expecting that there were another werewolf and she and it would battle it out or something.
Also, she ATE her BOYFRIEND.
ATE. BOYFRIEND.
Oh show. Your writing is still not awesome, but I heart you so much for fridging not one, but two men as of now.
ATE. BOYFRIEND.
I really did not expect that.
I also can see critique on animal wolfiness based on once-a-month cycle and during ages of menarche, except for the existence of male werewolves and also: OMG COOL. Though I do wonder what Granny thought about the werewolf who killed her father and a ton of villagers in front of her eyes going back to marry her.
And oh, I heart the Red/Snow friendship so much, and I really love the actress who plays Red/Ruby. I also like the entire Ruby storyline, though I am sad she is not going to remain Emma's sidekick. Because that little team-up was unexpected but awesome.
I think it's interesting that the whole menses/wolf/werewolf/moon thing is connected to Red's growing up, but that it also parallels Ruby's growth in confidence and her adopting less sexually aggressive clothes and make up in Storybrooke.
Also, I totally thought the heart in the box would be Graham's.
1x16 Heart of Darkness
Red giving James a head start in the opening is awesome!
I also love that the "I forgo love and embrace killing only to be brought back to myself by someone's sacrifice" role belongs to Snow and the "I put myself in harm's way for love to passively help my loved one" role belongs to James. I ship Snow/James so much! I also wonder how much more of the glass coffin/kiss of love plot we're going to get. I very much like how the show has transformed one of the most passive fairy tale plots (Snow White lying in coffin) into an incredibly active one (Snow downing potion and deciding to assassinate the queen!) and subverted true love's kiss a bit. In this world, kissing Snow White in the coffin doesn't work because she's unconscious (is this also why it didn't work on Frederick?)! Thank you, show, for that little acknowledgement of love being a mutual thing.
I'm still uneasy about where they're going with Rumpelstiltskin and what he has planned for Emma. I will roll my eyes so hard if the revelation is that Rumpelstiltskin is doing it for Twu Wuv all along.
I cannot even say how much I heart the contrast between David questioning Mary Margaret's innocence and Emma standing there by the cell, swearing that no matter what the evidence looks like, she will get Mary Margaret out of there, trust her. Oh David. How are you so sucky in Storybrooke when James is so awesome?
Also, I know the DNA test says the heart is Kathryn's, but I still think she's alive somewhere, probably locked up with Belle.
1x17 Hat Trick
I am not quite sure what to think of this episode, outside of "huh?"
This show really has a thing for single biological parents and their children, doesn't it? It's also interesting that this is the second single father we've seen so far, and that he fails his daughter a bit more than Krychek/Hansel and Gretel's dad. That said, still not sold on the wonderfulness of the biological family bond and how an adoptive family can never replace that.
It's funny, because Emma's speech to Mary Margaret can read both ways to me: she says it not even knowing Mary Margaret is her mother because blood ties are just that strong, or on a conscious level, she is creating a family of choice. I suspect it's more the former, but I like the latter reading more. I also love how Emma's first real lowering of the walls isn't to Henry, but to Mary Margaret.
And OMG, I love her and the teacup, and even more love her completely selling the "I want my mother" thing and then braining Jefferson with the telescope, and I heart Mary Margaret so much for helping to rescue Emma as well.
Also, it's nice to see Regina doing something vaguely nice after they have been greying up Rumpelstiltskin, despite knowing what happens to her father after.
And now, I really want fic of the Consortium of Evil Queens.
