Hallo Internets! I have gotten to hang out with colorblue, although much less than I wanted to, thanks to American Airlines' scheduling mishaps. Overall, there has been tasty fooding with good cheese and lots of fun talking about teenage ids and LJ Smith, First Forays into Fandom, and cracktasticness (JOEY HILL and zombie dinosaur apocalypse for the win!). On a less happy note, what I thought was an unfortunate allergy attack on the airplane seems to be morphing into a cold. This is not fair! I feel I should not get con crud until I have actually, say, made it to the con!

My schedule is running a little late, so I might miss the Gathering, but hopefully will be there in time for the POC dinner!

OMG, I just read the one where the Marguerite's hair turns white and eyes turn blue from shock after her father, who has been raping her for years, shoots her and forces her mother to rape Marguerite's twin brother, and then her mother grabs them all and leaps off a skyscraper, and they all die except Marguerite because she landed on her brother and killed him!

And then years later her father gets out of jail and kidnaps a little girl to lure Marguerite to a skyscraper so he can recreate the suicide all over again, and Marguerite shoves him off the building and falls with him and stabs him in mid-air to make him let go, but she saves the little girl because she is a skydiver and was wearing a parachute and also her dead twin brother appears as an angel to help out.

I think the sheer cracktasticness of that might actually top the zombie dinosaurs.

OMG and the best thing about that is Marguerite's dead brother is the hero of A Witch's Beauty!!!!

I suggest you start with Nature of Desire - Natural Law. Marguerite only makes a guest appearance in it, but it sets up some stuff and I really enjoy it. (Submissive cop investigates a series of murders associated with a BDSM club, falls hard for a dominatrix with a secret.)

Ice Queen is the first one starring Marguerite. It's really the first half of a complete novel. The second part, Nature of Desire: Mirror of My Soul, is the one in which her angsty backstory is revealed.

Oh, and A Witch's Beauty is the one with Marguerite's dead angel brother, the tentacled demon mermaid, and the zombie dinosaur apocalypse.

Joey Hill is terrible with race/non-white cultural issues, but in a well-meaning but hilariously wrong manner rather than a hateful or contemptuous one. She's unusually good with sensible discussion of relationship and power issues, so much so that you could probably use some of her books as basic primers on how to sensibly approach some issues that most writers just never address at all. Especially because she draws pretty clear lines between the parts of the books that are pure erotic fantasy, and the parts that are more realistic.
