So You Think You Can Dance, S5 Top 8 + eliminations

For once, I did not hate the Very Special number! I actually really liked it, especially the way many of the lifts were choreographed. Also, zombie hip-hop for the win!
Katie Holmes dancing and singing was amazingly not a disaster. I think they definitely choreographed around her, and you can tell she's not an awesome singer, but she was actually much better than I had expected. And I want the white suit she was in.
But mostly: GRAAAAAAHHHHHH!! Janette! NOOOOO! She was possibly my favorite, and just. ARGH. I know Melissa did the Very Special number, but I thought it should have been her. She hasn't been as good as adapting to as many of the styles as I felt the other women have been, and just. ARGH.
I also think Evan should have gone home instead of Jason. I wasn't too impressed with Jason at first, but I felt in the last two shows, he's been much more interesting, while Evan has largely stayed the same throughout. And I am so tired of cute white boys making it to the top 4! (Yes, still grumpy about Neil from S3.)
Also, I saw some of the videos on the site about the Robsons' routine last week and am still pissed off. Even more so! I feel I should not be as angry about the two Asian women involved (is Amanda Robson Asian?), and yet I am. "Queen of the Orient"? Jealous "geisha mistresses"? Seriously, WTF, Wade Robson, WTF?

I can't stand that Janette went home! She's awesome! I have to admit, of the remaining women, the two I have not really been into were Kayla and Melissa, but I've really warmed up to them in the last couple of episodes as they've been bringing it a little more than they have in the past. But Janette was still hands down way more compelling to me. Of the women, I would have preferred to see Melissa go (even though I liked her a lot this week), but of course she played a breast cancer survivor so that's not going to happen.
I was sorrier to see Jason go than I thought I would be. He spent most of the competition as a non-presence to me, but like Kayla and Melissa, I started liking him more over the past couple of episodes. He (along with many others) also stepped up his solo this week. I love Evan, but he should've gone awhile ago and if he's in the top four, something's wrong.
I'm just grateful that the VS routine was actually great, so that all the hyperventilating over it afterwards not quite as uncomfortable to sit through. Thank God it was worth some hoopla because really, how can you criticize a routine about cancer (and breast cancer no less) on national TV without coming off as totally dead inside. Of course they wept.
Apropos of nothing, I really think they did Kayla a disservice by not giving her something like hip hop earlier in the competition (I know it's supposed to be random, but Melissa magically gets a pas de deux en pointe? She and Ade are coincidentally reunited for a Very Special Routine? come ON producers) She can actually carry off something other than "lyrically angsty snow princess," but we never got to see it until now. I'm also glad to see her taking the note about getting her hair off of her face because it really makes a difference to being able to connect to her as a performer.
I was really disappointed that Katie Holmes didn't perform live after all the fuss they've been making about it. I enjoyed the number and thought it had a lot of polish, but it seemed flat and sort of cheap for having been filmed previously. It took a lot of the risk and stakes out of the performance and while I don't doubt that KH can sing, they sure made her voice sound processed as hell. I felt so bad when they pointed out Judy Garland's son and pointed out how special it must be for him to "(bear) witness (to)" such a cheap homage.

Mon, Jul. 27th, 2009 05:09 pm (UTC)Doh! Was the second part not live as well? That's really cheating! I was really tired when I watched and I must have missed all the not-live cues in the second part.
I am still so annoyed about Janette. I guess not quite as annoyed about the prospect of Evan in the top 4, as I do like the other women quite a bit, but I am still irritated! I liked her a lot! And I have nothing against Evan, it's just that I feel all the other guys are much more interesting. The funny thing is, like you said, if they had booted Jason two weeks ago, I wouldn't have complained at all, but I feel he's gotten really interesting in the past two weeks. Sigh.
