I think Lost in Translation was suggested as a "maybe sort of" movie, at least from what I can remember. I suspect it's more the whole "it is all about white people and their angst!" despite the fact that it's set in a non-white country, much like The Painted Veil (cholera as a romantic backdrop!). So I think it's more indicative of it being all about the white folk rather than the White Savior trope.
