Vaughan, Brian K., and Pia Guerra - Y: The Last Man: Safeword
Mon, Dec. 13th, 2004 02:37 pmThis installment of the series is very, very strange. I can't quite tell if it's setting us up for some larger event that's happening beyond the scope of this collection, or what, but yes, it's quite strange. There's an issue or two devoted to plumbing the depths of Yorick's psyche, and not much else seems to happen outside of that.
I'm actually not quite sure what to think, given that I read the first three books a few months ago and that I have very little context to evaluate the going-ons of this one. It mostly feels like a bit of a stopping place for a while. The gang does get into its usual trouble, but not that much seems to be revealed.
I am getting a little sick of the random and senseless violence in the series, although Vaughan is making a point of the fact that it is random and senseless. So on one hand I get that violence sucks, but on the other, I feel a little manipulated, because, hey, I get the point already, and it's starting to feel a little gratuitously violent instead of making a point about senseless violence. I don't know if any of that made sense to anyone who isn't me. I'm just not very good with violence. The martial arts type thing I can handle, but not anything with too much blood or painful impaling or whatnot, and I don't know if that makes me even more hypocritical because I don't mind violence as long as there's not blood.
Fine lines, I suppose. Anyhow, got rather sidetracked in that last paragraph.
So, still looking forward to what happens next and wondering what this book may have set up.
