Um. It is brutal and depressing, but given the subject matter, I wasn't that surprised. And I was actually gleefully vindicative when I read it because of how Anderson deconstructed certain ideas about the American Revolution, but that may just be me... I also didn't find it hopeless, but it is a pretty dark book.
