(second in a series beginning with Fire Dancer)
Rheba and Kirtn are back to schlepping across the universe, and this time, they are going to the planet Daemon with its exiled ruler, also called Daemon.
Spoilers for Fire Dancer
Fssa continues to be as awesome as before, though I wish he were more in the plot. Also, there's nothing in here that matches up with the Fssa scenes in Fire Dancer, particularly Fssa nearly dying!
I liked having more from Kirtn's point of view, no matter how much I unsympathetically laughed over his sexual frustration. We get more fun with illusions, but less of Rheba creatively using her powers (I think), and all in all, I wanted more Kirtn-Rheba, or at least more focus on their whole "my planet blew up" troubles. This was exacerbated by my dislike of Daemon.
It also looks like the next book is going to be another Kirtn-and-Rheba-visit-a-planet book, which is sad, as I want more on the other Senyas-B'ren pair and the fate of the two races. And UST, of course.
Overall, I liked this book, but less than the first one, as I constantly wanted to whomp Daemon over the head and because the UST between Rheba and Kirtn is not as foregrounded. Also, Kirtn! I sympathize a little with your angst over Rheba's premature sexual maturity and lack of corresponding sexual awareness, but given that your planet blew up and not many people are there to educate her about it, I feel a better course of action would be less angst and more sex ed. I also realize Rheba is too young for sex ed in terms of the planet's rules, but the whole "planet blowing up, races nearly extinct" thing is a very good mitigating factor.

Mon, Apr. 14th, 2008 10:48 pm (UTC)I was not crazy about the third book, I think because it had too many random action sequences and not enough Rheba and Kirtn smoldering at each other.
I might request this for Yuletide again. I did last year but didn't get it.
