Eek! Soryo actually killed Yuri! I fully expected her to miraculously turn up, especially when they couldn't find her body, but then they did find it.
I greatly approve of the final conflict being between Mine and Isaac; given the way v. 8 started, I was a little worried about an Isaac-Akiba showdown, particularly given how Rei's story overtakes Kira's in Soryo's Mars. Also, yay, psychic battlegrounds!
rachelmanija's enthusiasm for psychic kids may be affecting me.
On the other hand, giant negative points for the threatening black man in Mine's memories. Someone please tell me again how US stereotypes have no effect outside of the US?
Overall, I didn't enjoy the last volume as much as the first few, since the showdown meant much less psychological tension. The bit about Mine being a killer would have been effective save for the stupid black man rapist thing. But I like that Mine is the one to survive the series, since she's very like Isaac and Akiba in that she sort of sucks at human interactions, but she's still better at it than the both of them.
I am of two minds re: the pregnancy reveal, especially because I briefly thought Akiba's consciousness had gone into the fetus, which would have been freaky!
On non-plot notes, it was particularly interesting reading this after several volumes of Skip Beat -- I have some problems parsing SB because of the busy panels, and it's amazing how open and empty the paneling and pages are in ES. It's much more cinematic and contributes greatly to the atmosphere of the series.
All in all, a satisfying thriller with psychic kids. Now on to the next Soryo series on Cesare Borgia!

Tue, Mar. 25th, 2008 07:41 pm (UTC)I wanted more after the pregnancy reveal: Mine's thoughts on perpetrating the psychic gene, and how she might plan to raise the child to not be a psycho killer and use his or her powers responsibly. I also wonder if she's going to be scanning the kid's brain-waves!
The Borgia series: Is it licensed? Where are you getting it?

Tue, Mar. 25th, 2008 07:46 pm (UTC)I keep wondering, was Mine sort of psychic? Or was that part just her bond with Akiba? I like to think of Mine being the least psychic but most human of the ES's, or a naturally occurring ES or something. There definitely should have been more follow-up on her thoughts on the pregnancy, or at least something other than the cliched "At least I have something left of him to cling to!"
The Borgia series is sadly not licensed. I will email you.
