So instead of doing any one of the things I could have been doing (programming, tidying up the house, etc.), I sped-watched two and a half weeks' worth of American Idol, which I have never seen before. I blame this all on So You Think You Can Dance.

American Idol is strangely addictive, probably due to my weakness for covers, though I often want to whap Simon when he critiques the male singers for being "girly." Am looking forward to tonight's with an inordinate amount of glee, though it is to be the reward for getting work done.

My main observations are that no one should ever cover "Imagine" or "Hallelujah" ever again, and I don't care how much the judges like it. At least, not unless they are going to do a radically different arrangement, as I am sure both songs have enough covers for at least two lifetimes.

Also, I want a full-length version of the emo rock cover of "Hello."

How did white boy pop punk end up being the genre of my heart? Inquiring minds would like to know.

I was surprised by "Imagine", because it's a boring song -- very monotone -- and the kid actually made it interesting.

What I like best about Idol is watching and seeing who learns and grows. They aren't always the ones who are best in the early weeks.

Y'know, it's funny, I'm sure I've heard the song "Hallelujah" before, but I don't know it to identify it, and when I saw it in your post, I thought, "Oh, hey, FABULOUS! Someone's covering a Dar Williams song on American Idol? Awesome! She's... wait... no... something's wrong... oh, it must be this one she's talking about... and the Dar Williams song is Alleluia... right..."

Oops! I wish they had covered a Dar Williams song instead! I also wanted someone to do Johnny Cash or Nick Cave, but I'm not sure how well that'd go over...

I often want to whap Simon, and yet I love him. Randy too. Paula I can take or leave.

I really liked Alexandrea, and was so sad when she got voted out. Booooo!

I usually dislike snark and mean comments, but I get very amused by Randy and Paula ganging up on him. I wish Paula were more critical.

I don't have any favorites right now, though I think I am rooting for Ramiele, Asia'h and Syesha. Maybe. It is hard to say!

My family is rabid about American Idol: even my 62-year-old aunt. I just started watching bits here and there this season and you are right: it is strangely addictive. I have fun trying to figure out who is going to make my 14-year-old emo niece squee this week.

I want a full-length version of emo-"Hello" too. I hate "Hello," and have for years. God help me.

Although now I want a contestant to get on there and do all indie songs, or murder ballads, or something.
