I know what you mean about the dramas being more intense than western shows (and for sure anime seems that way to me, too, particularly in the realm of comedy), but the bit of Damo that I saw didn't seem over the top at all. Maybe I've just seen enough Chinese and Japanese cinema to recognize the acting style? Or maybe it's that the stakes seemed high enough to warrant the emotions: aieee, cutting off my arm! Yes, I'll be crying now, thank you!

Episode 2, eh? I might have to clear some time in my schedule...::eyes giant pile of TV::
