Snow Queen, ep. 01-06
Sun, Jan. 6th, 2008 06:32 pmThis series so far doesn't deserve my Coffee Prince icon of love, but I don't have a general use drama icon yet.
Han Tae-Woong is a genius at math (and pretty much everything else). This sets him up as a rival to the high school genius Kim Jung-Gyu. While he tries to befriend Jung-Gyu, he also meets a sad, rich, cocky little girl.
Fast-forward eight years, and Tae-Woong is a boxer who calls himself Deuk-Gu, and he stops a sad, rich, cocky girl from threatening suicide in a hospital.
Um. Yeah...
This is every bit as melodramatic and over-the-top and sappy as it sounds. Bo-Ra has a tragic, wasting illness (although myasthenia gravis seems to have much less potential for angst than stomach cancer, and I say this only in terms of how kdramas use tragic, wasting illnesses, and not as an actual measure of pain terminal conditions cause). She is bitchy, rich, somewhat suicidal, completely off her rocker, and mean. I still like her.
Deuk-Gu is mopey, broody, and mopey, and I watched this drama just because Hyun Bin from Kim Sam Soon is in it. He is scruffy. And did I mention the mopey?
I, uh, am not sure why I am still watching this, as it is nowhere near KSS, Coffee Prince, or Damo in terms of quality. So far, I have predicted every single plot turn, love interests galore have been brought in, it's all about Deuk-Gu's angst and woe, and I am disturbed by the show's treatment of class and gender.
But then, there's that whole thing where Tae-Woong/Deuk-Gu was supposed to meet kid Bo-Ra and he never comes, and she stands there for hours in the rain waiting and waiting for him, and she's been keeping that secretly in her heart the entire time.
And while most of the show so far has been her bickering and Deuk-Gu taking it, right when I decide I don't need to watch more, there'll be the moment when she realizes he's the oppa from her childhood, and all her carefully maintained defenses just fall apart. I am such a sucker.
My predictions are: intern girl and doctor guy will get together. Bo-Ra will die slowly and tragically, with a teary death scene in Deuk-Gu's arms. Deuk-Gu will get to go back to school and prove he's a complete genius at everything and eventually find solace in the arms of Seung-Ri (poor girl). There will be much tragedy and angst.
