Spoilers for all of the anime
This is basically a series going off on the high school AU Shinji dreams up in the last episode of the series. So far, everyone is much saner (not that that's hard....) and everything is much less mysterious. The giant of light/Adam has appeared, but the kids only start to battle in vol. 2. Shinji and Asuka are childhood friends, Rei is a bubbly (!!) transfer student, Kaworu is also a childhood friend of Shinji's, and Hikari is already making bentos for Toji. Misato's their homeroom teacher and Ritsuko is the school nurse, though both seem to have their jobs at NERV as well.
Also, Yui is still alive.
I'm still not quite sure what's going on; the kids (Shinji, Kaworu, Asuka, Rei, Toji) have just started to have their synch rates tested. It's pretty clear that Rei's still a clone or angel spawn or something weird, but instead of this leading to her saying two things a day, it means she's little and genki and trying to learn about life. And I think Kaworu's still an angel, though it's odd that NERV has only just picked up his oddness. Maybe he isn't really Shinji's childhood friend and altered memories? No idea.
I find that I am really fond of AU Shinji, but then, I wasn't that averse to him in the anime either. I actually like anime Rei better; she's more interesting than super-genki Rei. And while I do like Asuke in the anime, I really like her in the manga. She's still take-no-prisoners, have-no-tact, but in a way that reminds me more of early-Angel Cordy, as opposed to early-Buffy Cordy. I started hearting her when she went to dig out Rei's bag, despite not personally liking Rei, just because it was the right thing to do.
On the other hand, we still have the Shinji-harem effect, sigh. One just hopes that Misato doesn't make her way into it again, because gah!
I think I'll keep flipping through this just to see what happens, but I don't think I like it enough to buy it.
