Y'know, I don't remember anyone bringing up Anansi Boys. I think I've talked about it on LJ with other people, though possibly as a side note in comments. I know

rachelmanija touts it as doing a very cool thing with reader expectations by making the reader gradually realize that they had been assuming the protagonist was white because white is so the default.

Unless, of course, you are me, and completely miss all the "THIS CHARACTER IS NOT WHITE!" cues because white is so totally the default in my own head, and end up being very embarrassed about it later on.
