A kid I used to tutor in grammar back in high school asked me today: In the sentence "I sang at the top of my lungs," "I" is the subject, and "my" is the predicate nominative right?

I have to confess that I've always been kind of bad at remembering what all the little parts of grammar are called. I (usually) know how to make a proper sentence, even though I don't always make one... but I've never been able to keep track of what everything is called.

I'm with you on this one. While my grammar is quite good, I don't think I could tell a subjunctive clause from a dangling participle if my life depended on it. And sadly I was an English major, so really I shouldn't have any excuses!

Actually, my old roommate has a better grasp of rules of grammar, I think because he was born in Hong Kong and English is his second language. He's more conscious of the actual rules, whereas I'm more of the feel-it-out-as-you-go kind of grammarian. *g*

Hee, it's ok. I'm all uptight about it because I had it drilled into me at high school and tutored people in it for a few years.

I think the thing that got me the most about this was that everyone else was telling the kid that "my" was a predicate noun! It's not even a noun! And these are college kids too, argh.
