Some very nice person at work was thanking me for doing something and gave me a gift certificate (options were B&N, Starbucks, Jamba Juice, something else I don't remember because I immediately gravitated toward BOOKSBOOKSBOOKS).

And now, I have gone way out of my way to the nearest B&N. Instead of doing something practical and buying something to fill in the many gaping holes in my manga collection, I have instead started yet another new series.

But! It was Fullmetal Alchemist vol. 1, the manga! I flipped it open, and it was Ed and Al, and I could not resist and walked out with a giant smile on my face.

This show has eaten my braaaaaaaaains!

The differences between the manga and the book are cool - after book 7 or so, they veer way off from each other. So don't assume that anyone's who's died in the anime stays alive in the manga or anyone who survives in the anime escaped death in the manga. XD It's almost like reading a totally unrelated series. :D

And they arrange events differently, too.

I like the manga as well, but in a very different way. I'd almost recommend letting the series sit for a while before starting the manga, just so there's some separation, but I know how addictions need to be fed. :)

I concur! Which is why I don't feel too bad that I adore the anime and the manga leaves me cold--lalala, pick your own canon!

I like the manga - if the anime didn't exist, I'd still be reading the manga - but the anime is OMG AUUGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!! and the manga is "Ooh!"

[livejournal.com profile] oyceter: there's also about 3 or so light novels in the FMA series translated and available. :)

the icon is proof!

I am very happy that the anime took the jump and plotted out its own separate storyline tangent from the beginning instead of sticking to the manga and putting out years of filler as the manga catches up, a la Naruto. You piss off some fans of the manga, but you get a storyline that's very tight and bam-bam-bam from start to finish. (And OPs/EDs of "this is so spoilery in retrospect" DOOM.)

Also, manga!Scar = not hot. anime!Scar = HOT. End of story!

Yes! The anime adapted some elements from the novels as well, [livejournal.com profile] oyceter: Russell & Fletcher Tringham (the Plant Alchemy brothers / the fake Ed & Al clones) are from the Land of Sand novel and don't appear in the manga.

It is very good I am too lacking in time/funds to buy video game equipment. I spent about 15 minutes playing as Ed on one of the FMA games on an instore-console, and I about fangirled myself into a heart attack from getting to blow stuff up with alchemy and from Al running up and yelling at me/Ed in-game for getting too far ahead of him. "Bad nii-san!"

I read the first one, and it was okay, and got partway through the second before putting it down somewhere and losing it. My basic thoughts are that they're good for getting an Ed/Al fix, but otherwise lightweight.

They're fast reads, too. I'd suggest a trip to Barnes and Noble, a coffee, and an overstuffed chair there. :)

Flatmates/FMA-manga-lovers [livejournal.com profile] gweniveeve & [livejournal.com profile] flutingfrenzy have reported to me that the novels are pretty meh. I will ask which if any they would recommend.

What TOTALLY kills me is that I've seen EVERY FMA EPISODE EXCEPT for the LAST ONE. ARGH!!!! I've been waiting for Cartoon Network to air the stupid thing for ages so that I can finally watch the movie!

Manga!Scar has flashes of gorgeousness Exhibit A), but most of the time he is much more scowly and grim-looking and does not make my knees weak with his shoulders as a proper Scar should.

I KNOW! And I have no patience to play video games either, but I am so tempted to just buy the games and pester someone to play them for me on their game console and call me out of my book whenever Ed & Al do something cute.

Also, in the Broken Angel video game (I have never played it, but [livejournal.com profile] flutingfrenzy kindly keeps me updated on FMA things!): Roy meets Hawkeye secret-like because she is going undercover, in an outfit that Roy finds way more entertaining than she does.

(Now you get to be one of the people I randomly FMA picspam! AWESOME.)

My library has all of the DVDs; EXCEPT FOR THE LAST ONE which has the last few eps (which I was at least able to see on Cartoon Network). (I don't understand why they continually buy part of a series; they did this to buffy, angel, and battlestar galactica). I've been trying to get the last one for awhile.

Yes! I got them both into the anime as a proper crack dealer should. And now we have matching Movie!Ed & Movie!Roy plushies guarding our living room! (Both of them hated the movie, but we started speaking to each other again eventually! Browncoat!Ed conquers all.)

Everyone should watch FMA! I would watch it with you! Buuut bit of a commute.
