Veronica Mars 1x07-1x12

First off, I'm not all that fond of things that begin at the ending, especially when it's to have some sort of unexpected twist later. Alias used this way too often, and now I'm really sick of it.
I also managed to guess why the girl had actually run away from home, thanks to my exposure to shoujo manga. At least the mother didn't disavow the girl when she found out. But while it was awful, especially the resonance to Veronica, from the non-blood father who cares about a daughter who isn't his own child to the subject of rape.
Wow. Logan isn't entirely a psychotic jerk. I rather liked the camaraderie between him and Weevil (I like Weevil), and I was glad to see more of the class issues brought up. I'm so happy that this show isn't dropping any of it! But yes, I liked that not so subtle hint of how differently students were treated, given their financial backgrounds, with Logan's father's boots hitting the principal's desk.
And dude, something was going on between Weevil and Lilly? Huh. Reminds me of his cousin's thing with Logan's other girlfriend in an earlier episode....
But I am still withholding judgment on Logan, as he has earned my animosity early on.
I dislike Lianne more and more. It's just.. dude. Jake Kane? I mean, I guess he's much hotter than Keith, but Keith! I adore Keith!
1x08 Like a Virgin
Reputations! I really liked how Wallace's family is shown to be fairly upper middle class, with a nice house and everything, and that it was Wallace's mother warning him away because of the Mars having a bad rep, as opposed to the usual racial divide. And how much do I love Keith? He bit the guy! Hee!
Once again, I'm reminded of how tough Veronica is, despite her little-girl voice. Just walking through school like that every day and pretending that she doesn't care and being able to help people still. I really love her.
I almost thought that Meg was going to end up as the villain of the piece, given that there are so few honestly nice people in Neptune High.
And I hurt so much for Veronica, crying in her car and trying so hard not to.
1x09 Drink the Kool-Aid
Meh, wasn't so impressed with this episode. The "revelation" that the cult was actually nice took place too early on, and I didn't really feel that the paternity question really connected with the whole cult thing. I dunno. It felt like too many of the characters in this episode were too broadly drawn.

The problem with watching a show after having it pimped to you is that I know Logan is a darling of fandom, and I know Logan/Veronica seems to be the ship out there. And I am sitting here and stubbornly refusing to like Logan because he's still being the Obligatory Psychotic Jackass, and I have no idea what other good qualities he's shown, except for coming out of a really rotten family. Except, you know, other people come out of really rotten families as well and don't turn out to be Obligatory Psychotic Jackasses.
I think I've read too many alpha bastard romances for my own good.
Ok, I admit, I was warming up to him a bit when he got Weevil unexpelled (I have a strange soft spot for Weevil), but then his comments at the poker game and making fun of the other guy for calling him racist really made me mad. I mean, wow, way to poke at my hot buttons!
I also continue to like Duncan, much to my surprise. He's not actively a jackass, although he often lets things happen that he knows he shouldn't, but I like that he generally does keep trying to treat Veronica nicely and rein in Logan and be not-jerky.
No real comments on Keith's case, since the parents seem to be a little less three dimensional than their children.
Oh, and Weevil's comment about Veronica's head tilt totally cracked me up. As did Logan's "Fly, tiny blonde! Fly like the wind!"
1x11 Silence of the Lamb
Yay, it's Mac! I really find myself liking Mac! The obvious parallels between Mac's case and Veronica's case were a little annoying, but at least they weren't sledgehammered in. And as opposed to Veronica and the Kanes, at least Mac's biological family seems non-psychotic, which is always of the good. Although I do sort of wish that they didn't have Madison and Mac so obviously not fitting in their non-biological families, since that seemed to be kind of a cop-out. But on the other hand, I really really liked that Mac looked like her biological mother and sister, so much so that I was wondering if they had gotten the actress' real sister to play the little kid. Also, bonus points for the Ellen Raskin pimpage!
The serial killer thing was rather scary, but it makes me wonder... is Neptune really, really high profile? It seems sort of odd that all these things would be happening there, especially since it seems like such a small town -- the serial killer, the Lilly Kane murder, etc. Also, if there were a serial killer, wouldn't some higher authorities get pulled in? Or... do I just think that because all my knowledge of police procedurals comes from The X-Files?
I love Keith's phone calls to Veronica, trying so hard not to be panicked but also tracking her via GPS and really letting her know that he needs to find her right now. And barging in with a gun. That was awesome.
I sort of liked poor Cliff, but don't totally buy Veronica falling for him. Although I did like that Veronica has to live with constantly using people.
I continue to adore Wallace and his friendship with Veronica.
1x12 Clash of the Tritons
I dislike Rick already. Jerkwad.
Er, yeah, I do have an instinctive reaction about People Who Hurt Veronica. But honestly. The people at Neptune High are such jerks!! Except very few. It would bug me a little that it was so clearly divided along class lines, except there is the occasional rich person who is nice (Meg, Duncan, sort of) and the poor aren't shown to be out and out saintly. People are complicated! What a surprise!
But yes, Rick is a jerkwad. I mean... trying to play it safe is one thing, but letting someone else take the rap for a felony? Not cool.
Hrm, juicy secrets revealed in the counselor's office! To be honest, I was really sort of queasy about Veronica planting a bug there and listening to people's secrets, despite her desire to find Lilly's killer. I would flip out if I found out that I had been overheard about something like that. Especially Weevil's revelation. *hearts Weevil* Also, what is it about Weevil's family and Logan's girlfriends? I wonder if Weevil was so harsh on his cousin because he felt bad about his thing for Lilly?
Logan continues to be jerky. Don't blame Veronica! Ok, maybe it makes total sense from a character standpoint, but it still riles me. Um. Yes. I am very protective toward Veronica, who is snarky and brittle and still young, despite her tough exterior, and I love that she is flawed and does the wrong thing and eavesdrops and the like.
Duncan not remembering stuff doesn't feel like such a big reveal.
Also, I can't remember if this is the ep. where Veronica takes surveillance shots of Clarence whats-his-face, but that was cool. (obviously I watched too many in a row last night)
And yay for the sheriff listening to Veronica, albeit grudgingly!
And that last bit with Logan's mom? OW. OW. OW. Poor kid. I still don't really like him, but man, that sucks.
