Name meme!
Wed, Apr. 2nd, 2003 03:29 pmBecause I'm obsessed with names and attempting not to work on my thesis.
1. What does your first name mean?
Health and balance.
2. What does your middle name mean?
Full of joy.
3. What does your last name mean?
To be honest, I have no idea. I just looked it up, and one dictionary says it's some species of tortoise. Mostly it's just a last name. It was also the last name of the guy who supposedly invented paper in China! It also sounds like "vegetable."
4. So what does your name mean when put together?
Er. A healthy, balanced tortoise who is full of joy?
5. What would you have been named if you were the opposite gender?
I have no idea, but the first character in my first name would have still been "kang" (health). Something about my family tradition in which the kids of the oldest son have to have a certain character in their name.
6. Any other name oddities?
Apparently the second character of my first name was supposed to have a sun radical on it because my mother wanted my name to be brighter. But when she asked my dad's mother about it, the number of strokes was unlucky or something, so I have the character without the sun radical. They sound exactly the same, but I kind of think having the one with the radical would have been prettier.
Also, I go by my English middle name now because back when I first moved to Taiwan, there was a teacher in my bilingual school who refused to call her students by their given (often Chinese) names. She asked my mom if I had an English name, and if I didn't, also offered to name me for her! My mom quickly deferred and said I had an English name, which is why I go by [name] now. This also contributes greatly to confusion about my email address with friends in the university because half of them don't know [name] is my middle name.
And
yahtzee63's additions:
1. Do you like your name?
Yes. All parts.
2. What do you like best about it?
Very few people go by my name, and it's a very happy name. I like the non-girliness of my Chinese name.
3. What do you like least about it?
Half the people in Taiwan mispronounce the last character in my Chinese name. Half of them also look at my name and think I'm a boy. It's also annoying having all my emails being sent to the other [full name] here who graduated three years ago because people can't figure out my first name isn't [name].
4. If you HAD to change your name (witness protection program, whatever), what would you want it to be?
I want the girl in Crouching Tiger's name: Jiao Long (charming/coquettish dragon) because I like the mix of super-girliness with the dragon. English-wise, I would be ... hrm. I'm kind of fond of my name. Maybe something like Grace or Hope. I think I like Hope.
