oyceter: Stack of books with text "mmm... books!" (mmm books)

One of those contemporary romances in the style of Jennifer Crusie. And while it's pretty funny and light-hearted and made me giggle, it doesn't have that tinge of almost bitter truth that Crusie covers so well with her humor. It's weird, because while I'm reading a Crusie book, half the time I'm laughing my head off (and making the boy stare at me funny), but after I put it down, it sounds more and more serious (Tell Me Lies especially struck me this way).

Nerd in Shining Armor is more out and out funny, with Jack lusting after Genevieve, a secretary. They get stranded on a desert island together, thanks to the scummy boss (who Genevieve was making goggly eyes after), and Jack gets a chance to morph out of his computer nerdiness and into a real macho guy. Except he doesn't really, because mostly it's Gen saving their butts, thanks to growing up in hicksville. I actually was pretty fond of that part, having her whip out her manicure scissors as a means to peel fruit or suggesting using her curling iron to catch fish. It's nice to see that, despite that chicklit cover that makes me think it's about the next ditzy Bridget Jones, Gen was actually pretty competent under all the makeup and pretty clothes. Plus, more sexual experience than the hero, and a pretty funny scene teaching him.

Not a particularly deep book or really something that sticks, and sometimes the occasionally clunky prose got in the way of the funniness, but it was enjoyable and fluffy and made me happy, which can be hard. Too many supposedly enjoyable fluffy happy romances end up just making me want to chuck them against a wall.
