Randomosity and moving whine

I'm too lazy to type up anything substantial, so instead, you all get random things about my life.

1. I am so incredibly sick of packing already. Every time I want to do something or read something, it's in a box where I'm not. Cannot wait till I can finally unpack and stop living with boxes everywhere, though that will probably take an extremely long amount of time. Le sigh.

2. I finally watched the exhibition skates for Worlds, and man, Stephen Lambiel in loose jeans and a black mock turtleneck is really, really hot. He serves as an excellent reason to have more guys skate in jeans (though I suspect skating in jeans is tougher than skating in spandex?). Also, when he skates, he keeps showing little flashes of his tummy because the shirt is untucked. I never thought that would be sexy, and yet, it is. I think it's the sense of vulnerability.

3. "The Queen and the Soldier" has been stuck in my head for the past three weeks.

4. Not being able to cook is also driving me crazy. Am very sick of eating of having to buy lunch every time. So no more kitchen experimentation until I finish moving, woe.

5. I want to read a good, deep, quiet romance, but I can't seem to find a book that will fit this that isn't a reread. Sadly, all the romance novels I have aren't so good at quiet and deep.

6. On the plus side, I have finally finished my sister's purple scarf! Pictures to come as soon as I get my camera back. And so, I have started on a new project with green and gold ribbon. Ribbon knits funny, and it's much chunkier than I thought it would be. Yay summer projects! I love them because I'm too lazy to knit sleeves on sweaters.

7. I'm supposed to get a washer/dryer for the new place. Since LJ contains all knowledge, does anyone know anything about this? Thankfully, since it's my mom's place, it will be coming out of her budget, so price is as much of an issue.

8. Really, I just want to spend weeks on the sofa with my fat rats and watch TV and not pack anymore!

Pretty sweater! I finally finished my Very First Project, which ended up being a summer scarf in ribbon, and it is indeed a funny, fussy thing to knit with. It's a lovely change going to the easy, chunky black yarn.

Yay! Ribbon scarf! Ribbon is so horribly seductive because it's so beautiful in a ball, but I've never actually knit it up before.

This top marks the first project I've actually made a swatch for. Of course, when I say "make a swatch," I actually mean "knit about four rows, approximate gauge, decide on a larger needle and get too lazy to knit another swatch on the larger needle." And it's my first attempt to try and convert a flat pattern to a round one!

I suspect much messiness to come.

Yeah, I think I used too-large needles to knit the ribbon, because it's a very loose weave. But I really enjoyed the texture, even if it was fussy as hell (I was doing a drop-stitch, too, so there was much straightening of the yarn-overs).

I really should take some pictures...

I really like loose weaves... I think I tend to knit a little too tight, so my fabric never quite drapes the way I like it. I mean, I correct for it, but it's annoying to constantly redo swatches or test rows. And I found out that my knitting has this horrible lean to the left, just like my handwriting!

4. The Black Stallion and Flame! The Barbara Hambly books I gave you have a good, deep, quiet romance going on in between fighting flying, acid-dripping, Cthuloid creatures of the night.

3. It totally reminds me of Attolia. Actually, it's probably the reason why I want a good, quiet, deep romance. I think I will start on the Hambly's.

8. Poor Fitz-rat is wheezing again, so I have to be a mean rat-mom and force feed him antibiotics, and Fool-rat is doing something weird to his paws. Sigh. Silly rats. But then, last night, I was knitting, and Fitz-rat just sort of plopped himself down on my lap, and he was so nice and warm and fuzzy.

So looking forward to June!

I prefer the Suzanne Vega version.

But with "Left of Center", I prefer the Trespassers William version, which I have saved in a folder called "wow", and when I play it (every few days), I play it a couple of times in a row.

I really need to dig out her first two albums and get them on to the iPod.

If your mother will spring for it, it's worth buying a front-loading washer. They really are much gentler on the clothes.

Front-loaders are the water/energy conserving ones. They do reduce your fuel bills, and they are also better cleaners. Win/win if you have the money.

Highly recommend front-end loaders. Not as hard on your clothes (no stupid post to wrap your bra wires around), and because they don't fill up entirely with water, they save energy. Also, the special soap (a bit of a pain but read on) is good because it doesn't foam: the foaming agents are particularly unpleasant for the environment, so that's another way they're environmentally friendly.

Also, they have demon spin, and get most of the water out of the clothes before you remove them, sparing drying time (and energy). We bought the washer but couldn't afford the dryer, and haven't missed it as much as I thought we would. Clothes don't drip when you take them out of the washer, and air dry well.

Many cities (Toronto definitely, and others too) have energy rebates if you buy a front-end loader. It's not a lot of money, but it's something.
