I've been thinking about making a post (or posts) on depression lately. One will probably be on the experience of being depressed, and one will probably be on the experience of being around someone who is depressed.

I'm still not sure if these posts will be public or not, or how much personal info. I'll be putting in them, but I figured I'd sort of check and see if people were interested.

Ergo, poll!

Anything you cared to write, even if not in the above categories, would be of interest to me this week. (I, for the record, am not the depressed person.)

I know I haven't commented much lately, but I wanted to let you know I still read a lot of your posts, and that I want to learn more about depression and how it affects people. I never realised how common an illness it is until I got online. It's good that you're willing to be open about it. *hugs*

I am more and more realizing that unipolar depression (which I've had) is a completely different experience from bipolar. I think I had a vague idea of that before-- I mean, I knew the clinical difference between them-- but I didn't get a real understanding of the difference between them from the patient's point of view, the point of view of the people dealing with them, and how strategies for helping out are different, until this past year. If you wanted to write a bit about that, that would also be interesting.

The difference I always cite is that depressed people will take the medz becaue they're in so much pain they'll do anything to stop it, while bipolar people are often about as difficult to medicate as schizophrenics (and indeed super high flying mania, esp in someone who's been bipolar for a long time, is not that different from psychosis, or an acute schizophrenic state).

That is mainly meant to be rather funny, but I also think there is a grain of truth in it. With depressives the spirit is often willing but the flesh is immovable, or it feels like it. Bipolars not only tend to resist treatment when manic, then tend to resist treatment when they're asymptomatic (my husband: "But I'm not manic or depressed, why should I be on pills right now?").

I'm also interested in seeing what you &cie have to say about related things like anxiety, manic, and the sort-of-schizo stuff, if there's anything to say.

((feeds ticky box some yummy Zoloft))

I'd love to hear whatever you have to say about the topic -- I enjoy your writing in general (about food and rats and fun), too.
