We got cats on 6/22! Originally we were planning on one adult cat, but there were these two kitties at the shelter, and one of them was super goofy and CB loved them. So now Leeloo and Mouse are hanging out with us. Leeloo is the goofy one; she has fuzzy, medium-length fur that is gray with splotches of cream, and she is the least graceful cat ever. Also, she has a strange fascination with stinky things: she was having fun lounging around in the litter box before, and right now she likes drinking the air con water, licking CB's feet, and smelling shoes. Leeloo, why so stinky? She also contorts herself in various weird positions and doesn't sit in a neat cat loaf with her paws tucked under her, and she is incredibly uncoordinated. Mouse is a short-haired black-striped cat, and she looks Very Serious. She is much more coordinated than her sister, and I think a great deal smarter too (sorry Leeloo). She is also fascinated with her own tail and will chase it for half an hour, and she has already plotted several takeovers of our computers.

For people on Twitter, we ended up going with Mouse instead of Lilo partly because CB was having trouble calling them such similar names (he was okay naming them that, but got mixed up during actual use) and partly because I was already used to calling her Mouse.

They are very adorable and awesome, and they have helped out with stuff immensely.

I am also conflicted, not about the cats themselves, but more... I don't know. People reacting to the cats? Obviously it is not people's fault, nor is it the cats' fault, but it's very different from people reacting to the rats, and it still grates. But that is probably why there will be fewer cat posts here and more random photos on my legal name Facebook, where I mostly didn't post rat stuff because of drive-by comments. Anyway, as mentioned, it is definitely not the cats themselves, because having them around has made stuff so much better. It's just hard to deal with comments sometimes.

For people wondering, the allergies haven't really been an issue for me or CB. I can sometimes tell if I haven't taken my daily Zyrtec equivalent on time, but that's been the case before the cats as well. CB has also mostly been fine, except yesterday, when he got a thorough licking from the cats and was very itchy before going to bed. Other than that, we've only used the Allerpet once, and we're debating letting them into the bedroom.

By and large, Leeloo and Mouse adjusted very quickly to their new home! No trouble so far with litter box use (THANK GOD), not much issue with different foods. They hang out at our bedroom and bathroom door in the morning waiting for us to get up and pet them (or possibly feed them, but I will pretend it is out of affection!), and both of them have already slept in our laps a few times! Leeloo just flops down in any position whatsoever, while Mouse will first climb all over my keyboard and butt her head against my hand and mew pathetically, then run off while I try to scritch her. They are so cute and have such tiny cat faces! But they are already bigger than they were when we got them! Leeloo in particular is so much longer!

Also, CB has now discovered that no matter what toys you buy, the cats will be more interested in something else. He got them a crinkly foil ball to chase around, and I thought maybe it was cheap enough that they would play with it—I have found that pets' willingness to play with something varies inversely with the price—but alas, it was not the case! They found the crumpled up paper ball much more fun. The exception has been their cardboard scratching incline thing, although they actually seem to have more fun with it when it's disassembled, and the stick with dangly bits, which they never tire of! We have not yet experimented with laser pointers, but I am greatly anticipating the results already.
