Renji

I took Ren in to the vet yesterday because he hadn't been doing too well, and they called to say he passed away this morning.

I feel bad for having favorites, because I love all my rats to pieces, but Ren was one of my best guys. Wee Ren used to terrify me by climbing up the window shades; once he made it to the top, half-terrified and half-insanely-pleased with himself, and I had to rescue him because he couldn't figure out a way back down. The times I slept on the sofa, he would escape from the cage only to sit on my chest to wake me up and make me play with him every other hour. Other times, he'd escape from the cage only to sit under the coffee table two or three feet away, completely unsure of how to get back. He got through surgery and being a Frankenrat, and even though he still had stitches, the first time I let him play with Bya and Ruki again, he tried to pounce on Bya.

He would poke you with his nose to beg for scritches and just lie there on his side while you stroked his cheek, and when he got older, he would just lie in my lap or on my chest and hang out with me. He was generally just an awesome little rattie.

Am missing Ren dreadfully. Will be in LA on Wed. and am sacrificing some school time to get cheaper tickets, but do not care right now. Anyway, tell me something happy to tide me through till then?

Ed-rat has just now discovered one of the crucial skills all devious agouti berkshires (a la Ruki) should possess: how to jump out of the bathtub. The first time, I was so surprised that I went "WAH!" and he got so startled that he fell back down again, but the second time he made it up and ran up my arm.

Al-rat watched jealously, got into position and sprang, only to scrabble at the top and slither back down again. (Twice.)
