It's officially fall and/or winter now. I find it strange how a ten degree change in the temperate can cause such a large mood shift in me. But it's slightly chilly (well, for California, which is about as much chill as wimpy me can take), the skies were overcast all day with nary a beam of sunshine in sight, and I have a fuzzy sweater and boots on. It feels like the right weather to listen to Del Amitri.

But everything outside feels just a tad bit sharper and more unwelcoming, and interiors are looking brighter and cheerier hour by hour. Even the flourescent-lit cubicles looked downright cozy compared to the wind and rain outside. I looked outside this morning and decided it was a day for curling up in the couch with rats and a McKillip book (currently in the middle of Song for the Basilisk right now. Sadly, after this, I will only have a few more McKillip's to go through before I've read them all. I am parcelling them out slowly for days like this.)

It feels like everything is slowing down, taking measure of the past few months, contemplating more. It's time for hot soup and family get togethers, holidays and tradition.

I still miss summer. I don't operate well without much sunshine. I mourn the heat, the bright, intense colors, loud blaring music, sunglasses, the smell of grass.

Speaking of rainy day books, probably any book is a good rainy day book. Rainy days just seem to inspire books and reading. But I would particularly pick up old favorites like Robin McKinley or favorite books from childhood. That, or big fat epics to be buried in.

The book meme as seen on [livejournal.com profile] penmage's LJ

Hardback or Paperback? Until recently, mass market paperback for price and ease in lugging around everywhere (they fit in my purse! Well, some of my purses). Currently due to some of my beloved mass markets falling apart and due to republishing with prettier cover art and a waning of patience on my end, I am starting to buy more hardcovers and trade papers.

Highlight or Underline? I actually never got in the habit of highlighting or underlining for school. I never do it in non-textbook books, and rarely in textbooks. I would however, scribble math notes in the margins of my math textbooks.

Lewis or Tolkien? Tolkien, because he introduced me to the fantasy genre.

E.B. White or A.A. Milne? E.B. White. Never actually read the Winnie the Pooh stories, and Trumpet of the Swan was possibly the first chapter book I ever read.

T.S. Eliot or e.e. cummings? e. e. cummings

Stephen King or Dean Koontz? Not big reader of either, but I liked King's Eyes of the Dragon

Barnes & Noble or Borders? Amazon! Actually, Borders seems to have a better selection than Barnes and Noble, or they just happen to have what I'm looking for most of the time. I go to the used bookstore more though.

Waldenbooks or B. Dalton? Er, I can't really tell the difference.

Fantasy or Science Fiction? Fantasy.

Horror or Suspense? Don't like either, but will read suspense at times and never horror.

Bookmark or Dogear? Bookmark, unless it's a battered library book. Then I don't feel so bad. Not nice, but true.

Hemingway or Faulkner? Don't remember the Hemingway I read in high school, haven't read Faulkner

Fitzgerald or Steinbeck? Erm. Steinbeck, from memories of high school.

Homer or Plato? Homer.

Geoffrey Chaucer or Edmund Spenser? Chaucer. My AP English teacher once assigned each kid in the class (there were six of us, so it was more independent study) two Chaucer characters to do... we had to edit their stories and perform them in front of each other. I got the Wife of Bath and the nun and had a wonderfully good time, even though I usually hate public speaking.

Pen or Pencil? Pen, unless I'm doing math.

Looseleaf or Notepad? Notebooks galore.

Alphabetize: By Author or By Title? Author. Within author, the books are arranged chronologically in order of publication, unless that splits series up.

Dustjacket: Leave it On or Take it Off? If it's not covered in mylar, take it off while reading, put it back on for the shelf. If in mylar, leave it on.

Novella or Epic? Epic.

John Grisham or Scott Turow? I used to read all my dad's Grishams. Never read Turow.

J.K. Rowling or Lemony Snicket? Rowling (but have only read a few pages of Snicket).

John Irving or John Updike? Haven't read either.

Fiction or Non-fiction? Love non-fiction, but fiction is like a drug.

Historical Biography or Historical Romance? Romance. Alas, biography sounds much more prestigious, but my shelves say I like romance better ;).

A Few Pages per Sitting or Finish at Least a Chapter? It goes something like: "Just a few pages. Ooo, good part. Maybe I'll just finish this chapter. Ooo, the next chapter has the character I like. Oh, there are only a hundred pages left till the end, I might as well just finish."

Short Story or Creative Non-fiction Essay? Essay, I think. I sometimes find it difficult to get into short stories.

"It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"? "Once upon a time," for entertaining me so well in childhood and adulthood.

Buy or Borrow? Both. Often first borrow, then buy.

Book Reviews or Word of Mouth? Word of mouth (if one counts LJ reviews as word of mouth instead of book reviews).
