Mon, Sep. 6th, 2004 12:55 amSpent a very pleasant (though hot) day with
double_helix and
alexctelander, in which I acquired yet more books at Alex's bookstore, which is extremely nice and sells a refrigerator magnet finger puppet of Schroedinger's cat, who looks distinctly unhappy about being dead and alive at the same time. Judy Cuevas' Bliss was sitting innocently on the shelves in the used book section, completely unaware that I have spent the last five years looking for it before finally succumbing and getting it on ZShops. Then we went to a Japanese restaurant, in which I somehow managed to order everything that the kitchen had somehow never heard of, despite the existence of the foods on the menu. Then we went to their house, in which I acquired yet more books via borrowing, and while I feel vaguely gulty about walking off with a fairly large stack of books, most of me is quite satisfied about getting my hands on them (Mairelon the Magician! More Y: The Last Man! Ghost World! etc.)
So I am back at my place now, with a full stomach and loads of unread books and a very large grin on my face.

Five Things You May Not Know About My Time in School are:
1. I partied a lot in college. Which is very strange, given that I am anti-social and not fond of partying.
2. In my school, being smart was a good thing. I was very startled when I went to college and everyone spoke of being ostracized for being smart.
3. Swarthmore was my first choice school.
4. My graduating class in high scool consisted of 17 people. I had known all of them for at least four years, most of them for about 6-8 years.
5. We had to wear hideous pink tops for our uniform. Even the guys.
Five Things You May Not Know About the Job (Jobs) I Have (or Had) are:
1. I wiped down tables for three years during college.
2. I used to tutor English in high school and had a lot of fun drilling people in grammar.
3. The bookstore looks at roughly 25,000 books a weekend, and we can only take 3,000-4,000.
4. Two of my three jobs so far have involved customer service, despite my utter dislike of talking to customers.
5. Just last week I found a knitting book that was going for $200 used online.
Five Things You May Not Know About My Online Life are:
1. My online time now mostly consists of Livejournal, unless someone on LJ links to something else.
2. I obsessively check to see if anyone has friended me.
3. Currently, my online life pretty much is my social life.
4. I ventured online back in sophomore year of high school and have never gotten off since.
5. I have no idea what I used to do online in those dark days before I found fandom ;).
Five Things You May Not Know About Where I Live are:
1. We have an insane Martian vine that is trying to eat up the deck. I swear!
2. I have a Sandman library poster with the caption: "A book is a dream that you hold in your hands." hung over some of my shelves.
3. The boy has a racing chair, with a wheel and pedals, to play his racing games.
4. I am within walking distance of two independent bookstores (one new, one used), and the public library is right across from our apartment. Book heaven.
5. Speaking of the public library, it has a really nice sci-fi/fantasy collection. Or at least I think so.
Five Things You May Not Know About My Core Personality are:
1. I am very polite and shy around strangers, but I talk the ears off of people I am close to.
2. My spiritual view on life is incredibly nihilistic, and while this depresses me, I can't seem to manage to talk myself into any sort of spiritual belief.
3. My behavior around my friends is very different from my behavior around family (and the boy), which is incredibly bad.
4. I like being surrounded by people, but I don't always like interacting with them. This is why I like the internet and having roommates who don't make me talk to them.
5. Despite enjoying romance novels, I am incredibly unsentimental in real life.
Five Things You May Not Know About My Home Life are:
1. I take the rats out to play every day.
2. The boy and I have basically ceased to cook because we're both very lazy.
3. I spend pretty much all of my time either on the internet or watching TV.
4. I can't fall asleep unless I've read a few chapters from a book.
5. The boy spends much more time doing domestic stuff now that I've stopped cooking, mostly because I care less about the cleanliness of the apartment than he does.
Five Things You May Not Know that I Desperately Want are:
I can't think of anything that I desperately want that I haven't written about already -- books, more books, gift certificates for books, health insurance, a purpose in life, etc.
So: Five Things You May Not Know that I Want to a Lesser Degree:
1. A massage chair
2. A gift certificate of some sort to a spa, so I can get completely and totally pampered.
3. A hair cut.
4. A Grey Eye Glances CD.
5. My own house.
Five Embarrassing Fannish Admissions I Have That You May Not Know are:
1. I used to think Karen Rasch's Words series was the ultimate in fanfic.
2. I didn't actually find Becoming that heart-wrenching.
3. I like Beer Bad. And Bad Eggs. Tee hee. And I Only Have Eyes for You.
4. I have sent feedback a grand total of three times (Sisabet's Peacekeeper, Minnow's Things Left Undone, and Hard Candy). Bad fan. No biscuit.
5. LJ is my first venture into being a non-lurker, and I often feel like I'm butting in unwanted.
Five Things You May Not Know About What I Do in a Typical Day are:
1. I am unfunctional until my first cup of caffeine. I am trying to be not-addicted, but it's not working very well.
2. I walk home for lunch so I can read LJ (can't access it at work).
3. I walk by my graphic novels display in the store about ten times a day to see if anything has sold.
4. We spend about half an hour every day trying to decide what to do for dinner.
5. I watch the Good Eats Tivo has recorded (or X, or another TV show).
Five Things You May Not Know that are Really Important to My Character are (not necessarily attributes I possess, but rather things I strive for, or value, and values in others):
1. Intellectual curiosity and an open mind that is willing to try new things.
2. A desire to be kind even when the situation is very conducive to grumpiness. I know there's all this to-do about the Cult of Nice, but I really appreciate people who take the time to be polite and nice and who try to not deliberately hurt other people. Besides, after dealing with tons of grumpy customers, I very much enjoy the ones who try not to be grumpy.
3. The willingness to admit lack of knowledge or expertise instead of attempting to appear as though one knows everything under the sun.
4. Willingness to look one's flaws directly and to admit to needing change.
5. A desire to try instead of just sitting back and letting things happen.
Unfortunately, these are all very important to me because I do not do very well at them at all.
So I am back at my place now, with a full stomach and loads of unread books and a very large grin on my face.

Mon, Sep. 6th, 2004 06:08 pm (UTC)You are never unwanted. I love how much you love books. I am a bookworm myself, and often think that working in a book store would be heaven. My books threaten to overtake my living space, but I just can't get rid of any of them!

Mon, Sep. 6th, 2004 07:54 pm (UTC)Hee, I know how you feel! I'm starting to double-stack my books again, despite having just bought new shelves a few months ago.
