Most often, I feel like I use "corona" when I'm talking about the virus and the illness in general/normal terms, and "the rona" or "Big Rona" when I'm being flippant/sarcastic. I may have described Navy vessels (as outbreak locations) as "floating rona parties," for instance.
If someone dies of the virus, though, my brain says "oh, that's COVID." I don't entirely know why.
