This weird thing is happening so that one of my ears is constantly sort of plugged up. Like the feeling when you're in an airplane, except only in one ear. It was ok the first day, but it's been going on for at least three now, and it's starting to get really annoying.
I am constantly irked when I look up books in the store that are ostensibly on the history of the world, or the history of art, etc. or fairy tales of the world, or any such "worldwide" information to find that it largely tracks the world from Mesopotamia and Egypt to Rome and various European empires. Then there is the obligatory chapter on India or the Far East or Africa, as though everything in these non-European traditions are strangely unchanging. It forever irks me that while much time is spent on the differences between the middle ages and Renaissance and etc. etc., somehow it is assumed that things that happen outside of Europe are in some sort of stasis time. As such, not enough satisfying nuance in the discussions.
Lifewise, I am good and (obviously) extremely obsessed with the world of Lymond right now. I suspect that once I stop being bad and ignoring the job search, the happiness is going to go downhill all over again. Sigh. I feel so guilty now when everyone at work asks me when I'm leaving -- er, I dunno, apparently no one wants to hire me. And I've not been working at it like I should. But just going online and checking out the listings puts me in such a black mood that lasts for several days, and I just don't want to do it and feel stupid and incompetent all over again. I wish I knew what was going on with my life.
Plus, it's really hot right now. Hopefully we are getting an air conditioner tomorrow, oh joy.

Sun, Jul. 18th, 2004 04:43 am (UTC)On the books, I just returned one called Millinium which was a glancing history but did, I thought, a much better job, including some text on Africa and South America, and various other places that usually get overlooked.
Hope the ear feels better soon.

I think it's really truly okay to write a "Western civilizations"-centric book if you just come out and say so, instead of shunting the rest of the world into an uninteresting bin!

Mon, Jul. 19th, 2004 03:44 pm (UTC)I'm glad the bookstore has most of them filed under "Western Civilization." I mean, I don't mind that there are books written that focus on it, just, well, don't call it "world history" if all areas of the world are not considered equally!
