Went to see the exhibit today, which was quite nifty, even though it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. The best part for me was the small kimono exhibit. I so want a kimono. I also missed the sort of documentary they had, which would have been cool to see. Though I've read a bit about geisha and courtesans, I still haven't been able to see anything of them performing =(. Then we went and saw a bit of the Southeast Asian exhibit, which was also nifty. I've always regretted going through college without accumulating much knowledge at all about the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, Korea, and Africa. I was going to pass right through the China display, because I figure I have seen a good deal of Chinese art, but then I got distracted by all the jade carvings.

And Gmail is being all wonky, grrrr.

I am having a nice glass of Riesling. I don't know what's happened. I used to go out to the Street a good deal back in college, but now half a glass of wine makes me woozy. Thank you, Asian genes.

And now, a meme:

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] anodyna

5 things I'd buy right now if money were no object:
- A house (investment for the future ;). Plus, a house in California can never be a bad thing)
- A stereo system
- Really good health insurance (stolen from Anodyna)
- A plasma TV
- Patio furniture

5 things I'd buy at my local Target:
- Hangers with clips
- Cute hanging Christmas lights
- Sundry cleaning products
- Bookshelves (actually, I did)
- Silverware

5 DVDs I want to own:
- Angel S2 (and the rest of Angel and Buffy that hasn't come out yet)
- RotK extended edition
- Firefly
- Cowboy Bebop
- the American Spirited Away DVD (I have the Taiwan one, but that one doesn't have English subtitles so I can't watch it with the boy)

5 tv shows that should be on DVD:
You know, I really have no idea what's on DVD or not...
- Saved by the Bell (just because, haha)
- that Thieves series Melissa George was in, just because I want to see it
- everything else I can think of already is

5 things you don't like that most (so-called!) "normal" people love:
- most TV
- snow
- anything that has to do with communing with the great outdoors. The great outdoors has too many insects for me.
- Robert Jordan and that entire vein of fantasy
- soda

5 favorite "small" things in life:
- new books (the un-creased pages, the unbroken spines, the feel of venturing into new territory)
- old books (the way the ink is slightly raised, the smoothness of good paper, the quater-leather spines, the awe in the fact that the book is older than my grandfather)
- fruit
- sunshine
- cool cotton sheets

5 things I want to learn:
- Korean
- ballroom dancing and/or swing and/or Irish jigging
- Cantonese
- how to cook like my mom
- how to socialize properly

5 smells I love:
- cooking soy sauce
- fresh fruit
- clean laundry (I guess technically it just smells like Bounce)
- freshly cut grass
- the library

5 smells I hate:
- most perfumes and lotions and air fresheners and deoderant. Especially most perfumes and the sort of alcoholy smell in them. And cosmetics.
- really musty books left in someone's garage for a few months so mold and various gross insects set in (unfortunately, too many people try to sell these kinds of books to the bookstore and I have to sift through them)
- new car smell. Or old car smell. Car smell in general makes me nauseous
- that very specific airplane smell that you only get from recycling air who knows how many times. Ugh, that makes me nauseous too.
- metal/solder -- I once toured a car factory in science class during high school and the smell nearly made me throw up.

5 favorite sounds:
- the sound of typing
- the sound of nice high heels going down corridors (watching X-Files got me lots of this sound)
- the hum of nicely busy restaurants that aren't too trendily loud... I like listening to the low conversations and the clinking of silverware and china
- that sort of non-sound in bookstores and libraries

5 worst sounds:
- the stupid freaking leafblower on my weekday off in the morning that wakes me up out of my sound sleep and makes me want to strangle something. You may be able to tell that I hear this sound much more often than I would like. Now just the sound of something remotely like it sets me on my edge.
- stupid people yelling below my apartment at 3 in the morning on a weeknight
- car alarms
- my alarm clock
- hearing the people living above you enthusiastically making the bed squeak

5 things that make me fucking nuts:
- See above leafblower comment
- people who leave my lovely, just organized section in a giant mess without even buying a book
- stupid customers who somehow think that I am in charge of the entire store and am making up store policy just to spite them
- being late
- job searching

5 easy words you always have trouble spelling:
- epistolary (not easy per se, but I always mess up)
- occasionally
- I used to have huge problems spelling "definitely" but my English teacher finally got that out of my system
- exercise
- congratulations

5 things I hate for no good reason:
- customers who stop me to ask me questions (I really don't belong in the service industry...)
- those fashionable low-waisted pants
- fuzzy, single-toned icons photoshopped so much that I can't tell who's in the icon
- vegetable juice
- people who read books and methodically crack the spine in every place imaginable
