PSA: I've disabled all comments on my old LJ posts since the spambots hit over the weekend.

Question: CB's mom has recently gotten very into Bollywood. Her favorite is Jodhaa Akbar, and she likes the romance, the lead guy (Hrithik Roshan), the general lack of swearing and sex, and the devoutness of the main characters. Anyone have good recs for a DVD she might like? She's watched a ton more on Netflix, but I figure a DVD of something she's seen would also be okay.

I have not actually seen Jodhaa Akbar yet and I don't know if period-ness is a relevant factor, but [personal profile] shati recently showed me Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which stars Hrithik Roshaun as a dude trying to bring his long-lost big brother Shahrukh Khan back into the family after he runs away to marry the girl of his dreams. The basic message is "sometimes your parents are dicks but you love and respect them anyway," which makes it not a movie I would recommend to everyone, but might make it a good mom movie?

That aspect of it annoyed me a lot and I sometimes found both Hrithik and Kareena Kapoor's characters annoying (and I usually like both) but I liked the movie a lot anyway.

Off the top of my head:

*=more romance centered

Fanaa*
Jab We Met*
Chak De India
My Name Is Khan
Paheli*
Parineeta*
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai* (I enjoyed this one a lot the first time through, but less the second.)
Hum Tum*
Bhool Bhulaiyaa
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge* (I...maybe/probably misspelled that)

I haven't seen many South Indian movies, but I like Magadheera and Madrasapattinam a lot.

prozacpark says I should add Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, though I haven't seen it myself.

I would second Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Chak De India (ALWAYS), and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (and probably KKHH). And Fanaa ... but with the caveat that it is not exactly a feel-good movie? Um.

I love Hrithik Roshan, but I haven't actually seen much he's in, and definitely not much that's similar to Jodhaa Akbar.

I have a soft spot for Asoka, on the historical side of things, but it is pretty different in tone from JA. Lagaan is also set in the (much more recent) past and is less romance-centered, and maybe closer in tone, although the plot is very different.

Dhoom 2. It starts with Hrithik Roshan sand-surfing after stealing the British crown from a moving train while impersonating the Queen. It gets more cracktastic from there. Plus dancing.

Also Main Hoon Na, because mashing up Grease and the Matrix and some random military family drama is always good.

Have not seen Dhoom 2, but I advise Oyce avoid Dhoom #1, as in addition to its deeply silly plot it's got a surprising amount of Oh Dear, Madam, Now Your White T-Shirt Is All Soaked. It was very... vaguely porn-star-y, like clicking past Cinemax at 2 AM.

The historicals I've liked have all ended with hangings, so I guess I would not recommend them. I did very much like Dil Bole Hadippa!, which is a meet-cute cross-dressing sports movie, not least because its star, Rani Mukherjee, is cute as a button.

I'd like to put in a word for Om Shanti Om, because although Hrithik Roshan only makes a cameo in it (playing himself), it's about Bollywood, and also has reincarnation and ghosts and has Shah Rukh Khan playing a character based on Hrithik Roshan.

Also, there is a dance scene called "The Pain of Disco."

It's a definite feel-good movie.
