You dig historical romances, right, but are bothered by the squicky race/class/gender issues? Check out Beverly Jenkin's "Captured." It's the story of a mixed race pirate who rescues and falls for a black female slave during the American Revolution. It's got witty dialogue and sensual prose, and I think you would enjoy it. She's written a lot of books and won awards.
