This continues to make me so happy!
Question: is Wan's last name 선우/Sun Woo? I had originally thought he and his brother's names were 우민/Woo Min and 우완/Woo Wan, but I keep hearing "선우씨/Sun woo sshi." Sorry about the romanization! I keep going with the romanization in the subtitles, which I'm pretty sure is not following any system whatsoever.
I joke about dramas improving my Korean vocabulary and pronunciation, but it's true! I think I am getting a better feel for when to use different endings. 죠 especially, as it was extremely hard to wrap my head around with only textbook and teacher explanations and not enough examples.
More importantly, now I can recognize various formations of 죽다 (to die), such as "죽지마" (don't die) and "죽어싶어?!" (do you want to die?!). Sadly, I do not yet know how to say "お前を殺す" (I will kill you) yet.
Spoilers must live
I kind of love that even though Wan is our wastrel, he is also the innocent that gets lured into joining the revolution out of love! He seems to be the last to know about everything, from who is in Ae Mul Dan to who Su Hyun is. On the other hand, the past few episodes have been very heavy on Wan and Su Hyun character development, and I am sad that Yeo Kyung has had far less to do. On the other hand, at the very end of ep. 13, she even says that she feels like Wan is moving on while she is not changing. So I hope they will address that soon!
I was a little annoyed previously at the portrayal of the head of the police as a buffoon, as I thought it made the threat of Japanese occupation too light. But the reveal that he doesn't much care about the investigation because he doesn't care about Koreans killing other Koreans and suddenly takes notice once Japanese people are threatened made a lot more sense to me. I, uh, am also mean and giggle a bit at everyone's Japanese accents, although to be honest, they are a lot better than Chinese-accented Japanese.
Wan and Yeo Kyung are very cute. However, for me, they are completely overshadowed by the angst machine that is Su Hyun and Song Joo!
Yay! I am so glad that Su Hyun is actually a revolutionary in disguise! This means I am now far less worried about he and Cha Song Joo tragically killing each other in the end and more worried that one of them will die tragically in the other's arms. Or possibly go down together. My hopes of a happy ending of the two are pretty slim. Now I want to watch the entire series over to see the double meanings in everything he says!
I LOVE all the scenes between the two and how they never quite say anything and skirt around everything and barely even touch. Except, of course, when something happens to make one of them lose their much vaunted cool, such as when Su Hyun confronts her about being hurt and his having to shoot her in the arm! OMG. I have already watched the scene in which she finds out he's the leader of Ae Mul Dan twice now.
On one hand, I am sad that she is no longer the mastermind behind everything. On the other... ANGST GALORE! And I kind of love that she's all about killing more people. I want to know if he's the one who sent her to Russia to be trained in the first place, or if she did that herself and then joined up. I suspect the latter, because the brief training sequence with Wan and Yeo Kyung seems to suggest that she was part of another organization before it splintered or was absorbed by Ae Mul Dan.
Also, the scene in which she shoots all the bottles? AWESOME.
Unsurprisingly, I was sad there wasn't more of her after the big discovery of who Su Hyun was, largely because the rest of the episodes 12 and 13 focused on Su Hyun's Angsty Past and his reconciliation with Wan (dude, so slashy).
Also also, they are seriously the Worst Spies Ever! All the eavesdropping and yelling in the streets and etc! And the newspaper guys even managed to sneak into their hideaway! I feel they should have a more rigorous way to admit members as well. Still, there's enough trendy drama in there that I handwave all the plot fail.
Hopes for the final three episodes:
- More Yeo Kyung character development
- Song Joo being awesome!
- Less "Does s/he? Doesn't s/he?" with Yeo Kyung and Su Hyun, as it's already pretty clear he thinks of her as a sibling, and with Wan and Miyuki, since he's obviously doing it for his mother and for Ae Mul Dan.
- If any of the characters die, I am hoping it is Song Joo and Su Hyun together. I think I will be most annoyed if it is Song Joo alone. I'm sure that surprises no one...
Finally, Wan wears what might be the absolute worst outfit I have yet seen on this series: neon yellow shirt and black vest. It beats Hyun Bin's terrible neon green shirt + white vest and pants from Kim Sam Soon! I would say the worst kdrama outfit, but I have seen screencaps of Goong!
