oyceter: (dramas dramas dramas)

Wow, this keeps hitting so many of my buttons! I mean, I adore trendy dramas, but I feel it's fair to say that most of the ones I've watched so far do not involve police questioning, intrigue, or spies.

Also, Cha Song Joo continues to be made of pure win. Possibly even more than in the first three episodes, which I didn't think was possible!

Spoilers trick the police

So episode 4 opened with the reveal that Cha Song Joo was the killer of the guy in the opening of the drama (!), that she can assemble a gun in 35 seconds (!!), that this isn't her best time (!!!), and that she is running a section of resistance to the Japanese (!!!!). I think all I could say for about five minutes was, "Cha Song Joo, how are you so awesome?! BEST. THING. EVER!!"

I also love each and every loaded conversation she has with Lee Su Hyun. And it is confirmed that she killed the guy who raped her and got rid of his body herself and then ran off to Russia! I love her SO MUCH.

Relationship-wise, Wan has quickly done the kdrama hero thing of yelling loudly in order to hide his soft and squishy heart. I held strong against him even during his boxing match for a pair of rubber shoes, but I was totally lost as soon as there was drunken confessions from Yeo Kyung and falling asleep on shoulders. I am a total sucker for that. Also, I love that most of Yeo Kyung's fears have to do with being caught by the police and questioned.

I'm very unsure of where the drama is heading in terms of politics (no spoilers or hints! Unless you are warning me that the ending will make me throw things, in which case, please do). Now that Yeo Kyung's been recruited by Song Joo (awesome), I am not sure if the drama will go with her losing her revolutionary zeal in the light of real-life violence. I am very much hoping not, or at least hoping that she won't do the "We must work with the Japanese to get through this!" thing. I mean, I do not really think the writers would do that, but you never know.

I know Song Joo is the secondary lead, which means she has the leeway to be less conventinoal, but I'm still very surprised in a good way that she's not only a gisaeng, but a gisaeng who has killed people. And she does have a heart of gold under everything, but she really doesn't seem to show it that much.

I also continue to like the relationships between women in this drama. Song Joo-Yeo Kyung is my favorite, of course; I love that vibe of world-weary Song Joo trying to teach Yeo Kyung but also trying to protect her. But more than that, I've also been enjoying the little we've seen of Yeo Kyung and her mother. I'm always surprised when her mother doesn't protest Yeo Kyung's involvement with resistance movements, but happy that that's the case. And I was glad about Young Ran also being friends with both Song Joo and Yeo Kyung. I hope we get to see more of that as well.

I'm still enjoying Song Joo and Wan's odd friendship, and I laughed and laughed at the flashback to their first meeting. She is so awesome! And ooo, Wan and Su Hyun, ouch. I am much less certain about Su Hyun being an undercover agent with the police; if he is, would he have gone undercover so early? And with such a cost? I mean, I am hoping so, or that he'll eventually switch sides, but I'm not sure anymore. I am also extremely worried about what will happen to him and Song Joo (again, no spoilers please!), especially given the historical background. I don't particularly see them ending up together or things ending up well for either of them. But I will continue to enjoy the loads of angst, occasional sniping, and Meaningful Glances that they exchange with each other.

And oh, Wan. You lied to your father for Su Hyun even after everything? It's kind of embarrassing how fast I fall for kdrama heroes, but really! It was hard not to, especially after the second assassination and him getting Yeo Kyung out of there.

Sachiko continues to be extremely annoying, and I'd be angrier about the harpy wife going after younger men if I didn't like Yeo Kyung and Song Joo so much. Still, it would be nice to have more cool older women. On the other hand, the Chirashi staff keeps amusing me.

Plot-wise... I have no idea how things will wrap up, nor what the balance between trendy drama shenanigans and romance vs. intrigue and resistance movements and assassinations will be. 4 and 5 and the first half of 6 seemed heavy on the politics (yay), but it looks like the focus is shifting a little more to the romance now that Yeo Kyung has found out about the bet. I have no doubt that this is the point in which Su Hyun can get on her good side again even as Wan and Song Joo go around platonically plottting stuff.

... contemplating Yuletide prompts for this now.
