Kino's Journey, ep. 05-07

oyceterNetflix, why no DVD 3?! Argh!
This continues to be gorgeous and atmospheric, and there was even a two-part episode for more narrative. I seem to be in the mood for non-epic, non-plotty stories right now, so I should pick up Mushishi again as well, now that I have to wait for more episodes of this.
Anyhow, Kino and Hermes continue their haphazard journey to who-knows-where, encountering a very odd railroad and a gladiator's ring. Much like Ginko, Kino doesn't say much and doesn't reveal much, but that just contributes to the feel of the series. And I do like Kino, very much.

I really love how the series is playing with Kino's gender (also, it makes these write ups very difficult)! I particularly like her insistence that she's not a "miss" or "boy," but just Kino. And her reaction to being proposed to by the king was awesome.
Hermes and the dog talking was also great.
Mostly I just love the slight spookiness of the series and the almost fairy-tale like feel to the stories.

Thu, Oct. 16th, 2008 07:51 pm (UTC)Netflix has Paniponi Dash through Watch Instantly. It is dubbed, alas. I tried the first episode and decided that, at best, I'd want to watch it subbed.
It is set in high school, and some Netflix customers have compared it to a cross between Azumanga Daioh and FLCL. See, a new teacher arrives, who is a brilliant graduate of MIT. But she is, um, 11. There also something about aliens.
The premise sounded like it could be fun....
