Rec me anime!
Sun, Sep. 21st, 2008 06:56 pmCurrently I have no kdramas except Gourmet on my list, and I'm caught up with most of the shows I want to watch. Also, I'm in the mood for short episodes. So, rec me anime (but please read the qualifications first)!
I prefer series, though I may watch movies/OVAs too.
I've seen and liked:
Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam Wing, Gunslinger Girls, Haibane Renmei, Honey and Clover, Kare Kano (incomplete), Mushishi (incomplete), Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ouran High School Host Club, Princess Tutu, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Samurai Champloo, Vampire Knight, X, Yami no Matsuei, and nearly all the Studio Ghibli movies. And though it's not anime, I've seen Avatar too.
I've seen and disliked:
Akira, Gasaraki, Ghost in the Shell, Lain, Perfect Blue, Tenchi Muyo
- Available on Netflix
- Not too bloody
- Have cool women. I don't mind if they aren't the protagonists or if they don't physically kick ass, but I also don't want a series in which all the women or girls feel like objects.
- Not depressing
- Have an ending
- Bonus points for something funny with depth (ex. Samurai Champloo) or something that hits my gothic shoujo id buttons (ex. Vampire Knight)

Mon, Sep. 22nd, 2008 03:42 am (UTC)I'm about halfway through it, and a little upset that they change the order of the chapters to be chronological rather than the way they set up the episodes.
I'm still trying to decide if I like it or not, as it pretty much follows the anime really closely, and the writing is pretty minimalist. Having seen the anime already, it's kind of hard telling myself the book is worth the read, even though, I've gotten a tiny bit more understanding of Kino's personality from it so far.

Mon, Sep. 22nd, 2008 03:40 am (UTC)Gunbuster has two pretty kickass female protagonists, if you can get past the Gainax fanservice massive boobage. They tend to swing between emo and ass kick, which you ought to consider. Anyway premise is this- humanity fights giant bug aliens that come in waves lightyears across. It's got a good deal of sci-fi crack to it.
Giant Robo is pretty shonen, but has a female lead who is pretty awesome (and a supporting character who is also awesome) Everyone has emo "woe is me" moments, but there's lots of super-power ass kicking along the way. Even though it's classic Shonen ZOMG! WORLD MIGHT END?!?, it's not too serious if only between the art style and the melodrama it's kind of hard to take too seriously.
Both of these are pretty short (3 and 7 episodes OAVs respectively) and I can loan them to you if you're interested.
