Still beautifully written and drawn, and they're getting to stories that I don't know from the anime (this is not saying if they're in the anime or not, as I haven't finished it yet). Also, volume 4 contains one of my favorite mushi stories so far (the one with the cocoon).

Spoilers

As noted, my favorite is the story of the two sisters, the mushishi post office, and the cocoon, particularly the image of a girl emerging from a tiny hole in a cocoon. And there's another story involving eye trauma! I laughed when the mangaka explained by saying she (he?) was afraid of eye trauma and thereby extensively included it.

I feel bad about continually having very little to say about this series, but the one-offs don't lend themselves to character or plot analysis. Instead, I just read and enjoy.

I sympathize with the mangaka! I am afraid of eye trauma. In my (not-so) illustrious scientific career, I have:

-- passed out during experimental eye surgery on rats
-- blacked out for a couple seconds during eye surgery on humans
-- got lightheaded and fled the room during glaucoma surgery on humans (aiiiiie, this was TERRIBLE!)

If I cannot handle surgery performed under controlled conditions, how in the world can I possibly cope with real, true eye trauma?

Perhaps it is because you could not see it! I think the actual seeing of what they're doing to the eye is the real culprit!
